Camp Observations: Jaguars Maintain High Tempo on Day 2

Day 2 Campservations

JACKSONVILLE – Jaguars 2025 Training Camp continued Thursday.

It was the second day of the first training camp under Head Coach Liam Coen, featuring an hour-forty-five-minute practice in helmets and shorts at the Miller Electric Center. Each day throughout camp, members of Jaguars Media – senior writer John Oehser, senior reporter/editor J.P. Shadrick and team reporter Kainani Stevens – will share an observation.

Here are Thursday's "campservations:"

  • This is a bit of a repeat observation from Wednesday, but it's clear through two days of Jaguars '25 camp that there is an intensity in these early practices that goes at least a bit beyond normal early "ramp-up" training camp practices. The Jaguars for a second consecutive day had multiple 11-on-11 and seven-on-seven periods, with Thursday featuring two "team run" periods. The Jaguars will practice in pads for the first time in '25 camp next Monday. That will be the first time the run drills feature something close to "full" hitting, but Head Coach Liam Coen is showing early on the field during this camp that he was serious all offseason when he spoke of a real commitment to improving a running game that struggled in short-yardage last season. Hat tip to the defense Thursday, which intercepted two passes off backup quarterbacks – and which defensed at least three other passes. We'll get a better feel for the defense next week when we stop ramping up and start practicing in pads. The vibe around the Jaguars early remains positive. Two more days of "ramp up" remain – Friday and Sunday. Pads pop Monday. Stay tuned.

  • The defense seemed to have a good day Thursday, especially in the secondary. It seemed that there were many balls tipped away or deflected and a few intercepted. That's a good sign for a revamped group on the back end of the Jaguars' defense. One of the new faces, draft pick Caleb Ransaw, made an outstanding play along the sideline to strip a receiver of what was nearly a sure catch while tiptoeing the boundary. Defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile said after practice that the evaluation of the defensive backs – both corners and safeties – will be ongoing, and even into the season. The Jaguars had a league-low nine takeaways last season. That cannot happen, and the improved secondary should be a big reason why it improves.

  • Training camp continued on Day 2 with more time spent focusing on team drills as the players continue to learn their new systems. Rookie defensive back/wide receiver Travis Hunter continues to impress on the offensive side of the ball as he catches everything thrown his way. We saw two flashes from the defense, one from a rookie and one from a veteran. Ransaw had an impressive pass breakup and defensive end Travon Walker batted down a pass at the line of scrimmage. Campanile after practice raved about Walker both as a person and as a player, commending Walker's leadership and saying that when Walker speaks everyone listens.

Working hard. Check out top shots from the second day of Jaguars Training Camp in Jacksonville! 💪
