Lawrence, Washington Key In Huge Offensive Effort in Game That Was Week 16 Win vs. Broncos

WK16 GTW

DENVER, Colo. – Quarterback Trevor Lawrence was very, very good again.

Wide receiver Parker Washington matched his level – and if those two weren't the only stories in one of the biggest regular-season victories in Jaguars franchise history, they absolutely stood out.

Lawrence passed for 3 touchdowns and ran for 1, with Washington catching 6 passes for a game-high 145 yards and a touchdown as the Jaguars scored on 6 of 7 possessions against 1 of the NFL's best defenses in a 34-20 victory over the AFC West-leading Denver Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High Sunday afternoon.

"I feel great with our offense now," Lawrence said.

With reason. The Jaguars on Sunday extended their franchise-record scoring 25 or more points to 8 games, with Lawrence throwing 12 touchdowns and running for 2 more with no interceptions in the last 4 games.

"He's been playing at a high level," Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen said. "He's been preparing and practicing at a high level and this team is behind him. They appreciate him, they respect him and he's stepping up for us in a big way."

Next Up in the 'Bank

The Jaguars host the Tennessee Titans in Week 18 at EverBank Stadium (date TBD). The team will close out the regular season in their Prowler throwback uniforms.

Lawrence on Sunday completed 23 of 36 passes for 279 yards and a 115.4 rating – his fourth consecutive game with a passer rating of more than 100.

"Trev, he's in total command," Jaguars running back Travis Etienne Jr. said. "He's commanding the offense and he's out there. He's being a field general and that's what we need from him and [I'm] grateful that I'm playing with him still… Him just seeing things quickly, him being locked into his reason, I feel like 'Trev' really handles that."

Lawrence not only completed a 12-yard touchdown pass to Washington for a 7-0 first-quarter lead Sunday, a 63-yard catch-and-run pass to Washington set up a 10-yard third-quarter touchdown pass from Lawrence to Etienne. Washington's 23-yard catch-and-run touchdown set up a 26-yard field goal by kicker Cam Little that gave the Jaguars a 34-17 fourth-quarter lead.

"Parker Washington stepped up in a huge way," Coen said.

Coen said because the Jaguars expected Broncos All-Pro cornerback Patrick Surtain II to focus on either wide receiver Jakobi Meyers or wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr., "a lot of things were kind of set up for Parker to have a day."

"So that didn't just happen," Coen said. "We prepared that way all week, wanted to get him involved early and he had a look in his eye from a very early start that he was going to have a big day."

Washington, who now has 45 receptions for 665 yards and 4 touchdowns with 2 punt returns for touchdowns this season, said he sensed all week he might have a big game.

"That's where that confidence comes in, knowing the player I can be," he said. "This was a big-time game for us and it just happened to be the week where I feel really good. I felt good Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. As we got to Sunday, I was like, 'Let's go.' I was on phone calls with my trainer. I was with my mom this morning. I'm like, 'It's going to be a big game.' I was really excited to make those plays."

Said Meyers, "You've seen it all week in practice. He knew what the game called for and he went out there and showed it. I'm not surprised at all. He's been preparing for this week all week, honestly, and it looked good because of that."

NOTABLE

  • The Jaguars on Sunday scored 4 touchdowns and a field goal on 5 possessions inside the Broncos' 20-yard line, also converting 8 of 13 third downs into first downs. The Jaguars' 4 red-zone touchdowns: a 12-yard pass from Lawrence to Washington in the first quarter, a 3-yard pass from Lawrence to tight end Brenton Strange in the second quarter, a 1-yard run by Lawrence in the third quarter and a 10-yard pass from Lawrence to Etienne in the third quarter. "You look at third down and red zone is kind of where we ended up winning the game," Liam Coen said.

NOTABLE

  • A season-long trend continued Sunday, with the Jaguars' offensive line playing at a high level through significant injuries. Walker Little, who started the first 12 games of the season at left tackle, entered the game at right guard in the second quarter for starter Patrick Mekari (back) and finished the game there. Rookie center Jonah Monheim played briefly in the fourth quarter with starter Robert Hainsey out with a groin injury. "I was very proud of Walker being able to step in," Coen said. "Nobody flinched, nobody blinked. Those guys stayed the course."

QUOTABLE

  • Coen: "This team doesn't mind going and playing anywhere, anytime, anyplace. We've been successful on the West Coast this year. I think that the guys get closer when we go on the road. They enjoy being with each other. It's a group that enjoys … players, coaches, staff, we all kind of enjoy each other and hanging out and traveling and playing in games that nobody really thinks we're going to win."
