How the Jaguars Are Rising: Offense, Defense, and Special Teams Hitting Peak Form

JACKSONVILLE – He looks sharp and good – and he feels that way, too.

Quarterback Trevor Lawrence is playing well in recent weeks, and the Jaguars are winning. If he and the team seem like they believe in themselves, there's a reason.

"We all feel really confident out there, including myself," Lawrence said.

Lawrence, who has thrown 9 touchdowns in the last 4 game, spoke to the media Wednesday as the AFC South-leading Jaguars (9-4) prepared to play the New York Jets (3-10) at EverBank Stadium Sunday. Head Coach Liam Coen spoke to the media Wednesday morning, calling Lawrence's increased confidence and comfort in recent weeks "huge."

"Anytime your leaders are playing at your best and playing at their best, it's a good sign for your team," Coen said.

Lawrence, in his fifth season as the Jaguars' starter, has thrown 4 touchdowns with 0 interceptions in the last 2 games, and has thrown 18 touchdowns with 11 interceptions this season. He hasn't had a giveaway in the last 2 games after a 3-interception, 4-turnover performance in a Week 12 27-24 overtime victory over the Arizona Cardinals in which he also threw 3 touchdowns.

"Trev's playing at a high level," said Jaguars running back Travis Etienne Jr., who played with Lawrence at Clemson and the past four seasons with the Jaguars. "I love that for Trev. You know it's in there. Coach (Coen) has a way of bringing that dog out of you. I feel like he has been tapping into that with Trev.

"It's awesome to see, just the swagger, the confidence."

The Jaguars, who rank ninth in the NFL in scoring and 17th in total yards, have scored at least 25 points in every game while winning five of six games since a Week 9 bye.

"As an offense, we've played a lot better," Lawrence said. "Everyone's getting more comfortable, more confident. Our group's coming together more and more. It takes some time, especially on offense sometimes, to really get that rhythm and continuity between the whole group – especially when you have a lot of guys out with injuries and new guys coming in.

The Jaguars host the New York Jets in Week 15 at EverBank Stadium on December 14.

"We've had some changes. The guys have handled it really well."

Coen on Wednesday again praised Lawrence's play in a victory over the Indianapolis Colts this past Sunday, a game in which Lawrence passed for 244 yards and 2 touchdowns – and one in which he completed 4 passes of 26 yards or more. Two of those "explosive" pass plays led to first-half touchdowns and a third led to a third-quarter field goal.

"Especially to be able to be able to attack every blade of grass offensively," Coen said. "That's something that not just the offense feels, but the defense and special teams as well, because of being able to sustain drives and be able to create some explosives. It's definitely something that gets momentum for the rest of the team."

Lawrence spent the offseason focused on footwork and fundamentals specific to Coen's system, his fourth offensive scheme in the last six seasons dating to his final collegiate system.

"I feel really confident and comfortable in my knowledge of what I'm doing when I get out there on Sunday and our game plan," Lawrence said. As far as going into the game with an understanding and knowledge of just what my job is, what I'm able to get to, different checks, what I'm responsible for, what plays I need to get out of if it's certain look, I understand that really well and I feel I have mastered that by game day."

Coen on Wednesday praised Lawrence's development in multiple areas, saying "he definitely has a great understanding throughout the week of the plan.

"He has worked very hard at going through some of the reads versus maybe different looks or what we are expecting versus maybe what could occur," Coen said. "He's been throwing it well. He has been throwing good, for especially the last four weeks. It not anything necessarily that's changed about anything that we've done with him.

"I think he's just starting to feel more and more comfortable within the system and within the guys that he's playing with."

QUOTABLE

  • Coen on postseason accolades such as Coach of the Year: "That's the furthest thing from your brain at the moment. You're so focused on the day to day in terms of just trying to keep getting better as a group. We're learning so much every day that that's not even close."
