Meyers "Happy To Be Here…" | Wednesday Insider Before Week 10 at Texans

WED INSIDER

JACKSONVILLE – He's here and he's ready.

And while whether Jakobi Meyers can be fully ready by Sunday is unknown, the Jaguars' newest wide receiver made this much certain Wednesday:

He will work to be prepared quickly.

"I'm 100% happy about this opportunity to be here," he said.

Meyers, acquired in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders Tuesday for a fourth- and a sixth-round selection in the 2026 NFL Draft, spoke to the media Wednesday after his first Jaguars practice. Head Coach Liam Coen earlier Wednesday praised Meyers' "tough, strong hands," his ability to separate from defensive backs and his professional approach.

Meyers, 28, a seven-year NFL veteran, played 2023 and 2024 with the Raiders – and he has 33 receptions for 352 yards and no touchdowns in seven games this season.

"I've always really liked his game and the way he plays – and he's a great player," Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence said.

Lawrence said former Jaguars quarterback Mac Jones – who played with Meyers in New England in 2021-2022 – texted Lawrence immediately following the trade.

"He said, 'You're going to love him. One of my favorite guys I've played with,'" Lawrence said. "I'm excited to add him and get him involved and get him up to speed as soon as possible. He looked great today and practiced hard and it was good to see."

Meyers arrived in Jacksonville late Tuesday, passing a physical early Wednesday morning – and spending Wednesday practicing and learning the offense.

"I haven't even had a chance to take it all in yet," Meyers said. "I got the call, was on a flight two hours later and was at practice [Wednesday]. It's been moving quick, but I'm honestly happy.

"I'm happy to be here, help the guys out, do whatever I can to help make the team better and try to win some games."

Coen on Wednesday said the coming days will be finding "specific things to get him in the flow of the game."

"The exact challenge is the balance of how much he can handle, how quickly can he get some of the formations down … and just throwing on air with Trev, getting some reps," Coen said. "You want to get him opportunities, but also just to go play as a Jaguar.

"You just want to make sure there's a balance there. So that'll be a process throughout this week and through each part of the plan."

Said Meyers, "Anything new is a little challenging, but I'm excited to go through it. I want to soak this whole experience in, enjoy it and win games."

Meyers, who originally signed with the Patriots as a collegiate free agent following the 2019 NFL Draft, caught four passes for 24 yards in the Jaguars' 30-29 overtime victory over the Raiders this past Sunday.

"I was just talking crazy to some people [during the game]," Meyers said with a laugh. "I had to come in here and see them, and then it was like, 'All right, what did you mean when you said that?' It's cool, though. It's a great experience."

The Jaguars have sustained multiple injuries at wide receiver in recent weeks, with rookie wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter placed on injured reserve with a knee injury Friday and fifth-year veteran Dyami Brown leaving Sunday's game with a concussion.

Second-year wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. also left Sunday's game with an ankle injury, with Coen on Wednesday citing the need for "depth" at the position.

"Just for pure numbers alone, we were looking like we could have been a little thin there coming up," Coen said, noting that players such as veteran wide receivers Austin Trammell and Tim Jones – each of whom began last week on the practice squad – played key roles at receiver against the Raiders.

"They're going to continue to contribute and play and help us go win football games," Coen said, adding that acquiring Meyers had a lot to do "with where we were at from an availability standpoint coming out of that game."

Coen on Wednesday added that the Jaguars tried to put players less experienced in the offense in some situations where "you can just go line up, call it, not think about anything."

"Sometimes it does simplify things for you – especially as a player when you're asked to step up in a moment and you're not thinking about too much," Coen said. "You're not thinking about all the plays in the gameplan, you're just thinking about the moment and going and executing that moment.

"That's something we can definitely build off of."

The Jaguars hit the field Wednesday for Week 10 practice, gearing up for Sunday's AFC South Divisional matchup against the Houston Texans.

NOTABLE

  • Among the reasons the Jaguars were comfortable trading for Meyers was wide receivers coach Edgar Bennett, who coached Meyers the last two seasons with the Raiders. Meyers called Bennett "one of my favorite people in life," adding, "I'm just happy to be here with him. Anytime you have a relationship with somebody it's easier to move along with the process."
