Coen Talks Preparing Hunter for Reps on Both Sides Ahead of Week 4: "We can help him more…"

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars on Thursday practiced at the Miller Electric Center.

The Jaguars (2-1) will play the San Francisco 49ers (3-0) at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., Sunday in a 2025 Week 4 game. A look at Thursday around the Jaguars – with offensive coordinator Grant Udinski and defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile speaking to the media before practice and rookie wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter speaking after practice:

The Jaguars have seen glimpses of the Travis Hunter Experience offensively through three games. They're working to see more – and Hunter said he's ready for whatever opportunities that approach brings.

"I just have to continue to do my job, continue to be where I'm supposed to be for [quarterback] Trevor [Lawrence] and also for the rest of the guys on offense," Hunter said Thursday. "I have to make sure I'm in the right spot doing my job right so I can get the ball and do my thing."

Hunter, the No. 2 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, is playing extensively on both offense and defense. He is playing at a high level at cornerback, with his one reception for 21 yards at wide receiver in a 17-10 victory over the Houston Texans this past Sunday showing the playmaking ability the Jaguars want to utilize more moving forward.

"We can probably do a better job of helping him in some ways," Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen this week said of Hunter, who has 10 receptions for 76 yards in three games this season. "I wouldn't say he's behind. We had a great talk with Trav after this past game in terms of, 'Alright, how can we help you?'

"We have to be a little bit more diligent in terms of putting him in positions to maybe not have to do as many moving parts so we can just let him go play. He catches the out cut the other day and makes multiple people miss, so that's what we're trying to continue to push and that's got to be on us as well.

"He has a hand in it, absolutely, but I do think we can help him more."

Hunter called the communication between he and Jaguars coaches "great."

"They put me in the best situation or myself for me to go out and play strong," he said.

Coen said he doesn't expect Hunter's position – the "F" receiver – to change as much as he expects the Jaguars to find more opportunities for him in his current role.

"He's right now one position on offense and one position on defense, so that doesn't really fully change," Coen said. "I don't think it's fair right now to say, 'Hey, dude. Go learn Z and X and 12 and this and that.' It's like, 'Man, we've got to make sure he can really go and execute what we're asking him to do first and foremost, which is play F and play corner.' As we go and as he goes, I've got to believe that it'll continue to do this [upwards motion]."

Said offensive coordinator Grant Udinski, "It's not always going to be black and white for him. There are different coverages, different looks, different challenges the defense can pose. We try to limit that as much as we can so he can get really good at the things we know he's going to do, but at the same time give him the answers when those unknowns and those variables show up that cause things to change."

The Jaguars on Thursday issued their second of three injury reports for the week, with wide receiver Dyami Brown working limited Thursday after missing practice Wednesday with a shoulder injury sustained Sunday in a victory over the Houston Texans.

The following players practiced on a limited basis for a second consecutive day:

  • Rookie running back Bhayshul Tuten (shoulder)
  • Starting left guard Ezra Cleveland (ankle)
  • Starting right guard Patrick Mekari (elbow)
  • Rookie guard Wyatt Milum (knee)

Tuten and Cleveland played through the issues against Houston, with Milum out the first three games of the season. Wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. practiced full with a wrist issue for a second consecutive day Thursday.

The Jaguars through three games rank fifth in the NFL in points allowed with 51, and lead the NFL with 9 takeaways after finishing last in takeaways last season with 8 on defense.

Defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile's reason for the success to date: "We have good players."

"That's number one and we have guys that really care," he said. "They're trying so hard to get it right. They're very honest with each other and they're honest with me and that helps me because I don't think anything gets better without honesty.

"There's no job or there's no relationship in the world that honesty can't help you with. That's the number one thing, for them to be able to be transparent with me and myself with them and with each other. They're kind of counting on each other, pouring into each other, every day and they're all selling out for each other, not on each other.

"That's what I would attribute any of the success to."
