Game Report, 2025 Week 5: Jaguars 31, Chiefs 28

2025 GAME REPORT THUMBNAIL

JACKSONVILLE – They played the best, and did so with guts.

With guts came glory.

Trevor Lawrence ran for 2 touchdowns – including the game-winner with :23 remaining – and threw for another as the Jaguars overcame a 14-point first-half deficit for a dramatic 31-28 victory over the three-time defending AFC Champion Kansas City Chiefs in front of 69,329 at EverBank Stadium on Monday.

"The resiliency is what this team has and has continued to show," Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen said.

Lawrence's 1-yard, tackle-breaking run on a play on which he had been stepped on and fell gave the Jaguars the lead, capping a 7-play, 60-yard drive.

"What a crazy finish," Lawrence said. "It's a big win. They're a good team. They've been a good team for a long time. They're hard to beat. They're always in it and they always seem to make the plays.

"It was cool for us to go take and go win it at the end."

Lawrence completed passes of 33 yards to wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. and 13 yards to wide receiver Dyami Brown to key the final drive, with a pass interference penalty on defensive back Chamarri Conner covering Thomas in the end zone giving the Jaguars a first-and-goal at the one on the play before Lawrence's touchdown.

"I'm just proud of this team." linebacker Devin Lloyd said.

Running back Kareem Hunt's two-yard run gave the Chiefs a 4-point lead with 1:45 remaining. Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs' two-time NFL Most Valuable Player quarterback, led the 12-play 86-yard drive.

The Jaguars (4-1) won their third consecutive game and beat the Chiefs for the first time since 2009. They are tied for first place in the AFC South with the Indianapolis Colts and are 4-1 for the first time since 2017.

"It's a huge moment for our team, our organization," Coen said. "Huge win. I'm proud of the guys."

The Chiefs (2-3) had won the teams' last eight meetings.

A key moment came late in the third quarter, when Lloyd – a fourth-year linebacker – intercepted Mahomes a yard from the end zone and returned it for a 99-yard touchdown and a 21-14 Jaguars lead.

"I'm grateful for everybody that helped me get to the end zone," Lloyd said.

Lawrence, the Jaguars' fifth-year quarterback, threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Parker Washington in the second quarter and ran for a 10-yard touchdown in the third quarter to rally the Jaguars from a 14-0 deficit.

The Chiefs had won 23 consecutive games when leading by 14 or more points. The Jaguars, after finishing 3-10 in one-score games in 2024, have won three consecutive such games.

"There was really no flinch or blink," Coen said. "It really took all three phases. All three phases really impacted the game. The toughness and resiliency is really something I'm proud of."

Lawrence completed 18 of 25 passes for 221 yards and 1 touchdown with 1 interception, and ran for 54 yards and 2 touchdowns on 10 carries. Running back Travis Etienne Jr. rushed for 49 yards on 12 carries.

Lawrence's lone interception came early in the fourth quarter, with Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt's five-yard run tying the game two plays after cornerback Trent McDuffie intercepted Lawrence at the Jaguars 19.

Mahomes completed 29 of 41 passes for 318 yards and 1 touchdown with 1 interception. The Jaguars registered no sacks and 1 takeaway, entering the game with an NFL-leading 13 takeaways.

"It was incredible," Lloyd said. "We expected it to be electric and it was. I'm glad we were able to come out with a big win against a great team."
