Draft Luncheon 2026: "Stay Agile"

PRE DRAFT

JACKSONVILLE – The circumstance is notably new. The basic approach is not.

The Jaguars, a year after the splashiest draft in the franchise's three decades, enter this late April with a decidedly lower pre-draft profile. A regime now in its second season. No first-round selection.

Neither of which means a low-key attitude toward the draft. Not even close.

"You're always going to stay agile," James Gladstone said.

Gladstone, the Jaguars' general manager, and Head Coach Liam Coen spoke to the media Thursday afternoon at the team's annual pre-draft luncheon at the Miller Electric Center – with both discussing the difference in their second offseason with the organization compared to the first.

"A little less frantic," Coen said with a smile. "It's just allowed us to maybe get to different or deeper dialogue maybe a little bit quicker on some of the guys that we're really honing in on."

Another difference:

Whereas the Jaguars traded up with the Cleveland Browns to select wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter No. 2 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, their first selection in the '26 draft currently is No. 56 overall. They traded their '26 first-round selection to the Browns as part of the Hunter deal.

The Jaguars have selected at least once in Round 1 in all previous 31 drafts in franchise history.

"You're never bored," Gladstone said. "You're always thinking through what we might be able to do. I think that mental gymnastics certainly is an engaging element regardless of where your first pick point is."

The Jaguars currently hold 11 selections in the April 23-25 NFL Draft: Round 2 (No. 56), Round 3 (No. 81), Round 3 (No. 88), Round 3 (No. 100), Round 4 (No. 124), Round 5 (No. 164), Round 5 (No. 166), Round 6 (No. 203), Round 7 (No. 233), Round 7 (No. 240) and Round 7 (No. 245).

"We do scenarios," Gladstone said. "We walk through, 'Hey, if this pot of players is there, which one do we feel most comfortable targeting, knowing that at our next pinpoint or few pick points, these are the players we feel like may be in scope, how do we feel about the combination of these different players together, so on and so forth.'

"We're working through that a little bit. Obviously that stuff on draft night, there's no telling. All it takes is one team to take a player you want, and you're moving on to the next you were eyeing up. That may, in fact, alter what we do on the pick point behind it, and the pick point behind that.

"We're trying to chop through that as best we can."

Gladstone and Coen when discussing this year's draft referenced the 2021 NFL Draft, when both were with the Los Angeles Rams when that franchise's first selection was No. 104 overall.

"There is no doubt about it; we have waited longer," he said, with Coen noting, "We were having a blast [early in the draft] hanging out at the beach house."

Gladstone said he was "really excited about" the Jaguars' '26 draft positioning.

"Those slots that you're thinking about are more contributing slots," he said. "When you're talking about first-year players, typically that's the expectation, finding a way to contribute and offer a positive impact.

"It can be a little bit more challenging on the early end of a season as a rookie or even towards midseason to really feel that come to life. In the instances that it does, that's great. That's usually above the expectation, especially when you're talking about pick 50 and beyond, which is where we find ourselves at this point."

NOTABLE

  • Gladstone on Thursday said the team expects Hunter to be limited in the Jaguars' '26 offseason program, which begins April 20 and runs through June 17. Hunter sustained a season-ending knee injury in a Week 9 practice last season. "For all intents and purpose, he'll be a limited participant through the offseason program with eyes on return to play at full tick in training camp," Gladstone said.

QUOTABLE

  • Gladstone on the Jaguars this past weekend extending defensive end Travon Walker's contract: "it was a pretty important piece. He's somebody that by season's end we wanted to align ourselves with beyond just the contract that we had at the time. His commitment to our football team, his commitment to his teammates, it seeps out of his soul. It was very easy to see what his piece to our puzzle meant. The scheme fit, the priorities we have on our defense, it just all really matches up in a real way. He's the type of human being that you feel comfortable making a decision like that about. Really excited for really the evolution we'll see moving forward with not only his usage, but that entire defensive front and those guys behind him as we get into Year 2 of the system."
