OTA Observations Day 1: Chemistry Class

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars held Day 1 of their 2026 organized team activities at the Miller Electric Center Tuesday.

Four Jaguars media members – senior writer John Oehser, senior correspondent Brian Sexton, senior reporter/editor J.P. Shadrick and team reporter/producer Kainani Stevens – shared an observation following practice. Here they are:

Oehser: This was a day for tone-setting, and the tone around the Jaguars on Day 1 2026 OTAs was as expected. "New season, new team," Head Coach Liam Coen said following Tuesday's two-hour practice – and the theme of looking forward to '26 and very much not being satisfied with winning the AFC South in 2025 indeed ran through the MEC Tuesday as it has throughout this offseason. While Coen emphasized while speaking to the media that evaluating positions such as offensive line and running back in unpadded offseason work is difficult, he lauded the "chemistry" between quarterback Trevor Lawrence and wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. – with the duo connecting multiple times Tuesday, including a deep pass for a touchdown late in practice. "It was nice to see a great start to that today, live and in person," Coen said. "Those two have worked at it this spring thus far throughout Phase One, Phase Two – then showed up in a nice way today."

Sexton: This is a good team, and you can tell the Jaguars know it. This team believes in Coen's vision and why wouldn't that be the case after winning 13 games last season? The way the Jaguars move through a practice, the way they talk between plays and the way they work in every drill is distinct. They can see the talent; they understand what it takes and even on the first day of OTAs they were competing as hard as you should in May. It's an intangible, but you can feel the confidence in the coaches and among themselves – and it feels like a very good team.

Shadrick: The Jaguars moved into Phase 3 of the offseason program with the first OTA practice Tuesday. There is plenty to see on offense, especially how Lawrence refines the offense in his second year in Coen's offense. It's more about the details into each play/route/run, and working out different ideas for concepts. How many tight ends are pushed into the mix on offense will be something to watch all offseason, as it will be around the league. A few different tight ends made catches down the field on Tuesday. It's too early to figure out the rotation at running back, but you can see why veteran Ameer Abdullah has had such a lengthy career - great in space, with elite balance. On defense, it's good to see rookies from last year back out there - including safety Caleb Ransaw and linebacker Jalen McLeod. Both have a chance to contribute in a big way in 2026 and beyond.

Stevens: The Jaguars' first 2026 organized team activities practice held true to the name. The organization we have witnessed during the offseason program and during rookie minicamp carried into Tuesday. Coaches were focused and detailed with the position groups and spent ample time on all facets during a two-hour practice. Tight end Brenton Strange spent ample time with the wide receivers during offensive drills, and the defensive backs were impressive with a few flashy plays –including an interception from safety Eric Murray during a teams period. Hope to see continued offensive progress as OTAs continue next week.
