BIG IMPRESSION
- The Jaguars handled business like a title contender in a 60-minute beatdown of the overmatched Browns. The defending AFC South champions did not waste any time with the visitors, forcing a turnover on the game's opening drive and scoring on six of their first seven possessions. The offense took advantage of favorable field position from defensive stops and takeaways, playing the kind of complementary football that wins games in the postseason. Although the Browns are not regarded as a top contender, the impressive performance in the season opener suggests the Jaguars are ready to take the next step as a perennial contender by dominating the games they are expected to win.
KEYS TO VICTORY
- The Jaguars controlled the game from start to finish behind an efficient offensive performance and a stellar defensive effort. The offense raced up and down the field against the Browns, exhibiting the high-level execution Head Coach Liam Coen has preached to the team from Day 1. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence led the way with a nearly flawless performance, completing 18 of 23 passes for 245 yards and four touchdowns. The former No.1 overall pick played the game like a pass-first point guard committed to getting the ball to the open man, as evidenced by his completions to nine different receivers. With the Browns' defense unable to hone in on a primary target, Jaguars receivers Parker Washington, Brian Thomas Jr., Jakobi Meyers and Brenton Strange took turns coming up with big plays for the offense. Defensively, the Jaguars stuffed the run early and forced quarterback Deshaun Watson into a miserable performance that brought the boo birds out from the Browns' contingent. The constant harassment prevented the former Pro Bowler from settling in and finding a rhythm, leading to inaccurate throws down the field. Although Watson finished with a decent stat line (completed 16 of 22 passes for 205 yards with a touchdown and an interception, six rushes for 38 yards), the veteran did not move the ball consistently against the Jaguars until garbage time. Considering how the Jaguars wanted to force the Browns into a one-dimensional game plan with Watson forced to throw the ball around the yard, the execution of the plan should earn high marks in the defensive meeting room.
TREVOR'S TIME
- Lawrence was as good as advertised as a 2025 MVP finalist. The Jaguars' franchise quarterback was on a heater against the Browns, showcasing his exceptional accuracy, velocity and anticipation as a passer. He completed passes to nine different receivers on a variety of fastballs and changeups delivered into tight windows or over the top of second-level defenders at intermediate range. With Lawrence displaying the pinpoint accuracy and superb timing that ignited the Jaguars down the stretch in 2025, the sixth-year pro looks like he is ready to challenge Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Matthew Stafford and Lamar Jackson for a spot on the list of the NFL's top quarterbacks.

- Right tackle Cole Van Lanen's return to the lineup after an eighth-month recovery from knee surgery was a positive development for the Jaguars. As a key member of the frontline due to his steady play and versatility, the veteran stabilized the unit and helped protect Lawrence from an aggressive Browns' defensive front. Additionally, Van Lanen and Co. paved the way for the Jaguars' unheralded runners to find plenty of room on an assortment of zone and gap-scheme runs. As the unsung hero of the group that sparked the Jaguars' offensive success, Van Lanen deserves a game ball for his efforts.
OFFENSIVELY SPEAKING
- The Jaguars' ultra-efficient offense flashed its potential against the Browns, with Lawrence throwing touchdowns to four different receivers. The balanced distribution of the passing game, combined with the sneaky effective running game, kept the Browns guessing for four quarters. With Coen in midseason rhythm as a play-caller, the Jaguars' game plan and game day execution was too much for the overmatched Browns.
DEFENSIVELY SPEAKING
- Defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile unleashed his defenders on the Browns using an assortment of blitzes, simulated pressures and games to disrupt the visitors' offensive flow. The Jaguars ran to the ball like mad men and delivered punishing blows repeatedly to anyone wearing white. The physical domination and schematic suffocation are exactly what we are accustomed to seeing from a unit that should be regarded as one of the league's elite by season's end.
