Five Defining Key Plays in Jaguars' 36-19 Victory Over Colts

Articles-Tile

JACKSONVILLE – Senior writer John Oehser examines five key plays from the Jaguars' 36-19 victory over the Indianapolis Colts in a 2025 Week 14 game at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville Sunday

1. Piiiick. The Jaguars got early momentum Sunday from a player who has given them momentum a lot throughout the season: Linebacker Devin Lloyd. The Colts faced first-and-10 at their 20 after a Jaguars punt quickly ended the game's opening possession. Colts quarterback Daniel Jones threw short over the middle to wide receiver Michael Pittman, with Lloyd intercepting and returning it to the Colts 21. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw 18 yards to Thomas for first-and-goal at the 7, with running back Travis Etienne Jr.'s 3-yard run on second-and-goal giving the Jaguars a 7-0 lead with 10:39 remaining in the first quarter. The interception, Lloyd's team-leading fifth this season, was the first of three Jaguars takeaways for the game – with two first-half takeaways leading to 14 first-half points. "Our defense did an unbelievable job again creating turnovers, and we were able to take advantage of them," Head Coach Liam Coen said.

2. What.A.Catch. The Jaguars passed effectively Sunday despite slick conditions – and Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. contributed to that in spectacular fashion to set up an early touchdown. With the score tied 7-7 after a 1-yard touchdown run by Colts running back Jonathan Taylor, the Jaguars drove effectively and quickly to retake the lead. On third-and-5 from the Jaguars 31, Lawrence threw deep down the right sideline to Thomas, who caught the pass one-handed with his left hand held by Colts cornerback Charvarius Ward for a 39-yard gain to the Colts 30. "Just going out there and beating my defender," Thomas said. "I got a 1-on-1. I was really hoping that he would throw it to me. I saw it in the air. I had to go get it regardless. I don't care where he was at or what happens, I just had to go get it. I went out there and made a play." Lawrence followed that with a 16-yard pass to tight end Brenton Strange and a 14-yard pass to wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, with the 14-yarder to Meyers capping a five-play, 74-yard drive and giving the Jaguars a 14-7 lead with 2:27 remaining in the first quarter. "We had a play on that we use, kind of a three-beater," Lawrence said, referring to the Colts' Cover 3 defense on the touchdown. "You get the overlap corner, and we've got a nice little shot … Jakobi matched up on the backer. So had a good plan for that, and it worked great."

3. Fuuuuuumble. The Jaguars already had momentum early in the second quarter. The second Colts turnover of the game gave them a lot more. The Jaguars led 14-7 when Taylor fumbled after a 4-yard run, with Jaguars safety Eric Murray forcing the fumble. Cornerback Jarrian Jones recovered at the 28, with Etienne scoring untouched on a 28-yard run over right tackle on the ensuing play. That gave the Jaguars a 21-7 lead with 12:52 remaining in the first half. "They all feel great because it's really hard to score in the NFL," Etienne said. "I'm happy for the opportunity to make the play for them, make the play for the team obviously, take care of the ball and being reliable for my teammates."

4. Fourth-and-nope. The Jaguars dominated the first half, then came up with a huge defensive play to establish further momentum late in the second quarter. The Jaguars led 21-10 when the Colts faced fourth-and-1 at the Jaguars 44 with 1:50 remaining in the second quarter. Defensive end Travon Walker stuffed Taylor for a 1-yard loss. "Very proud of Travon," Coen said of Walker, who missed the last two games with a knee injury. "I know he's been chomping at the bit to get back out there and go put it on tape. That's what he's been trying to go do. He stayed consistent. He worked his tail off from a rehab standpoint and was able to go out there and make a difference for us today." Lawrence on the ensuing series converted third-and-15 from the Jaguars 40 with a 37-yard pass to wide receiver Tim Patrick, then capped a 12-play, 55-yard drive with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Patrick to push the lead to 28-10 with :07 remaining in the first half. The touchdown came as Lawrence rolled away from pressure on third-and-goal. "They actually matched that play pretty good," Lawrence said. "They do that a lot in the red zone. It's good defense, good scheme where they try to cover everybody up, especially when they know you're throwing the ball. We had no timeouts. So they covered it well. Our line blocked awesome. I had a lane to escape. Those are the big plays in the red zone when you can scramble and score off them. That's how so many touchdowns in the league are off scrambles. Great to see the guys continue to work and find a way."

5. Fourth-and-yep. The Jaguars held at least a 15-point lead throughout the second half, with a big play late in the third quarter essentially clinching their fourth consecutive victory – and their 11th consecutive victory over the Colts at home. The Jaguars led 28-13 but the game was still in doubt when they faced fourth-and-1 from their 46 with just under 3 minutes remaining in the third quarter. Lawrence behind the offensive line pushed for the first down, with kicker Cam Little's 35-yard field goal with 14:05 remaining in the fourth quarter pushing the Jaguars' lead to 31-13.
