JACKSONVILLE – Cecil Shorts III's 2013 season is over. So is Will Rackley's.
Shorts, a third-year veteran wide receiver, and the Jaguars' leading receiver this season, was placed on injured reserve on Tuesday after missing Sunday's game with a groin injury.
Rackley was placed on injured reserve after recurring concussion symptoms also kept him out against Buffalo on Sunday.
The Jaguars activated second-year guard Drew Nowak from the practice squad and also signed rookie center Patrick Lewis off Cleveland's practice squad.
Shorts played through a groin injury much of the season, but the issue and pain worsened after the Jaguars' victory over the Houston Texans on Thursday, December 5. He was unable to practice Wednesday or Thursday last week, and worked just four or five plays last Friday.
He and Head Coach Gus Bradley each said Monday he likely wouldn't play the rest of the season.
Shorts, a fourth-round selection in the 2011 NFL Draft from Mount Union, caught 66 passes for777 yards and three touchdowns this season. He caught a touchdown pass in each of the final two games he played, victories at Cleveland and at home against Houston.
Rackley, a third-round selection 2011, missed the 2012 season with an ankle injury, but started 11 games this season. He missed two games this season with concussion immediately after the bye week, but started the next three games before again having concussion symptoms that kept him out on Sunday.
Nowak, originally signed as a rookie free agent following the 2012 NFL Draft, spent the first 15 weeks on the Jaguars' practice squad this season. He missed last season with a foot injury sustained in preseason. Nowak started 32 of 47 games as a defensive tackle at Western Michigan.
Lewis (6-feet-1, 311 pounds), originally a rookie free agent with Green Bay, spent the preseason with the Packers. He was claimed off waivers by Cleveland and spent 12 weeks on the active roster but did not play. He was waived November 26 and re-signed to the Browns' practice squad November 29.
Lewis started 48 consecutive games at Texans A&M.
Also Tuesday, third-year defensive end D'Aundre Reed (6-4, 260) was signed to the practice squad. A seventh-round selection of the Minnesota Vikings in 2011, he spent two seasons with Minnesota and was waived following the 2013 preseason. He played six games for Minnesota in 2012, and spent time this season on the San Francisco 49ers' practice squad.
