Walker on Game That Was Jaguars' Week 18 Win to Clinch AFC South: "Just Getting Started…"

GTW WK 18

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars emphatically reached an important goal Sunday.

They were just as emphatic that that means little compared to what happens next, with the playoffs at hand after clinching the division title.

"I'm not trying to take the foot off the pedal," Foyesade Oluokun said.

Oluokun, the Jaguars' middle linebacker and defensive captain, spoke in a celebrating locker room after a 41-7 victory over the Tennessee Titans at EverBank Stadium Sunday clinched their second AFC South title in four seasons. The T-Shirt he wore commemorated the title. A cap commemorating the title sat askew on his head, and teammates reiterated his message.

"People are always talking about, 'What's the ceiling of this team?''' Jaguars defensive end Travon Walker said. "There's no such thing as a ceiling. You always want to continue to rise to the occasion. This is the occasion we set for ourselves as a team.

"We're just now getting started."

Winning the South was cool. It's not the ultimate cool.

"We know there's more for us; it doesn't stop here," said Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who threw three touchdown passes – all in the first half – Sunday and who finished the season with a franchise-record 38 total touchdowns, 29 passing and nine rushing.

"It took us all this work to get here. Let's not let it go to waste."

The Jaguars (13-4), who clinched a third AFC South title in nine years and their first since 2022 Sunday, will host an AFC Wild Card Playoff game at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville next weekend. They will enter the postseason seeded No. 3 in the AFC behind the Denver Broncos (No. 1) and New England Patriots (No. 2).

"It's a whole new season," Walker said. "We're just going to continuously elevate from where we're coming from now to playoff time. We're going to continue to get better."

Oluokun said while winning the South was "solid," and that he was "very happy," he added, "We still have work to be done."

"This is when you take that deep breath in," Oluokun said. "You work all this time and you understand how good the team is. You can't let that go to waste. We're trying to make it as long as possible with this group of guys.

"This is the most wins I've had in a year. It's the best team I've been on. Why would I let that go to waste? You have to keep going, keep going in that preparation process. You have all this talent in the room, everybody playing like this … Take advantage of it.

"Getting in the playoffs is very hard. We're in. Let's make it count."

NOTABLE

  • The Jaguars on Sunday allowed the Titans 77 yards rushing, securing their status for the season as the NFL's No. 1 defense against the run. The Jaguars for the season allowed 85.58 yards rushing per game and did not allow an opposing running back to rush for more than 100 yards in a game. "That's a testament," Jaguars defensive end Josh Hines-Allen said, crediting Jaguars nose tackle DaVon Hamilton for being a major part of the run defense. "I think it starts with D-Ham. In the summer I sat up here and said D-Ham is the best nose in the game. I'm going to say it again. D-Ham is the best nose all year, I think. He's the reason why our defense is the best defense at doing that particular job. The easiest thing to do in the National Football League is to turn around and hand the ball off to a running back. When it's difficult to do because of the guys we have up front, obviously it becomes a problem."

QUOTABLE

  • Coen: "The way that we've been approaching each week has been almost playoff mentality for a while now. We haven't talked about playoffs, but I think that they understand the severity of what's at stake and where we're at, and that truly it's win or go home at this point. Like we talked about last night: Today is the biggest game in franchise history, because it's the next one. That's it, because it's the next one. That's been the mindset and mentality of this group. They've stayed even-keeled, and I think that, yeah, there's confidence, this team has confidence, but they're not overlooking anybody, and they know that whoever comes here has to play us."

QUOTABLE

  • Lawrence: "We're a team. There's offense, defense, special teams, but we all come together. I think that has been one of the strongest parts of our team is the complementary aspect of it and having each other's back. When we need a stop, we get one. When we need to go score and pick the defense up, we do it. Special teams has been making huge plays all year. We're all in it together. We've got more games to play, so excited for that. We've got to keep earning more."
