JACKSONVILLE – His confidence never wavered.
Head Coach Liam Coen made that clear Monday when discussing the Jaguars' passing offense – and in particular quarterback Trevor Lawrence. He made this clear, too:
He likes that part of the offense more as time passes.
"Each week I'm getting more confident as a play-caller with the pass game," he said.
Coen spoke Monday, a day after a 27-24 overtime victory over the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. – a game in which Lawrence threw 3 touchdowns, 3 interceptions and lost a fumble that was returned for a first-quarter touchdown.
Three Jaguars second-half drives ended in interceptions – with two ending in touchdown passes by Lawrence, who also led the game-winning field-goal drive in overtime.
"He stayed steady," tight end Brenton Strange said of Lawrence. "Trevor did the things he needed to do to help us win the game. It's not always going to be pretty for all of us. Sometimes I might mess up, or somebody else might mess up, and it's not always going to be pretty. Trevor did a great job of just fighting the whole entire game and staying steady.
"No matter what goes on, I've always got full belief, full faith in Trevor in everything that he does. Whatever he does, I'm right there with him, supporting him right by his side."
The Jaguars on Sunday rallied twice from four-point second-half deficits, with Lawrence throwing a 10-yard third-quarter touchdown to wide receiver Jakobi Meyers for a 17-14 lead and a 9-yard fourth-quarter touchdown to wide receiver Parker Washington for a 24-21 lead.
"Like I told him, I said, 'I had a lot of confidence as a play-caller calling pass plays – really all throughout the game, honestly,''' Coen said. "As a play-caller, calling it and working with those guys, I had a lot of trust and belief that they were going to make plays in the pass game and they did."
Coen called the throw on Washington's touchdown "unbelievable," also calling Lawrence avoiding a rush and throwing to Meyers in the end zone on that touchdown "a great play." Lawrence started the overtime drive that ended with a 52-yard field goal by kicker Cam Little with a 25-yard deep pass to Washington that gave the Jaguars first-and-10 at the Cardinals 40.
"A huge play," Coen called the overtime throw to Washington.
Lawrence completed 18 of 30 passes for 256 yards Sunday, with Coen saying protection caused issues in the second quarter. He also noted that a third-quarter interception by cornerback Garrett Williams was tipped by defensive lineman Calais Campbell and that safety Budda Baker made a "great play" intercepting Lawrence in the fourth quarter.
Strange caught five passes for 93 yards Sunday, with Washington catching five passes for 71 yards and a touchdown. Meyers, acquired in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders, caught four passes for 50 yards and a touchdown in his third game with the Jaguars.
"It's just been building over time," Coen said of his confidence in the passing game and a wide receiver group that played Sunday without starting wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. (ankle) and rookie wide receiver Travis Hunter (injured reserve, knee). "Guys have been able to go out and continue to try to put good stuff on tape. It has been happening in practice.
"It's the intentionality throughout the week and it has shown up in improving the pass game. Is it perfect? No. Are we lighting the world on fire every time we throw? No, but it has improved and I – as the play caller as I mentioned – do have confidence in calling pass plays that we're going to find a completion.
"It's important for us as an offense, as a team, especially to continue to be more explosive, but to be balanced. The guys are believing, they're trying, they're working their tails off throughout the week. I do have confidence."

- The Jaguars (7-4), winners of three of their last four games, moved to within a game of the division-leading Indianapolis Colts (8-3) in the AFC South Sunday. They will visit AFC South-rival Tennessee (1-10) at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tenn., Sunday. "The division means something," Coen said. "The divisional games, you can feel that there's just a different level, which is what you want in divisional games. You know that it's going to be a four-quarter football game. We know what this is going to be. This is going to be a dog fight."
