Long Snapping "A Dream That Came True" for D-Ham in Game That Was Jaguars' Week 13 Win at Titans

W13 GTW

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – He prepared for this, never really wanting it to happen.

This was a memorable, weird day for DaVon Hamilton – and a weird, memorable day for the Jaguars' special teams.

"Definitely a dream that came true," Hamilton called it.

Hamilton, the Jaguars' standout starting nose tackle, played long snapper for a stretch late in the first and throughout the second quarter of a 25-3 victory over the Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tenn., Sunday. Long snapper Ross Matiscik during that stretch was out with a back issue.

"He did great," Matiscik said. "He did phenomenal. D-Ham is my guy and I kept telling him on the sideline the second half, 'Thanks for having my back,' because that's a tough job. I think if you ask any snapper in the league or anybody that has done it, they'll say the same thing.

"There are some nerves involved. Protecting's hard, but he did phenomenal. I'm really proud of him."

Matiscik snapped on a Jaguars punt that ended the game's first series and also made the tackle on Titans returner Chimere Dike after a 9-yard return. Hamilton then snapped on a successful extra point by kicker Cam Little, three punts by Logan Cooke and Little's 45-yard field goal on the final play of the first half.

"It was very cool," Hamilton said. "It's something I've been working on for about six years in the league, so it has been interesting. Haven't got my opportunity until today and it was very exciting. Definitely not something I want to do on a day-to-day basis, obviously, but it was fun."

Head Coach Liam Coen called the situation "a little stressful, for sure."

"Credit D-Ham for stepping in with limited repetitions," Coen said. "It just speaks to the dude that he is and the player that he has been for us this season. He's just so consistent as a human being, as a pro. But yes, that was a little stressful."

Hamilton said he hadn't practiced long snapping since training camp, with Cooke saying he worked with Hamilton "a tiny bit" at that time.

"Last year, randomly throughout the year, we did a couple snaps," Cooke said. "That's so hard. You look at a guy who has gloves on and taped wrists [during games]. It's a hard job regardless, so then you put all that in there. For him just to get the ball in there in the vicinity of where you want it is all you can ask for.

"He killed it. D-Ham, he's a stud. He definitely did a great job, so that was fun."

Matiscik returned for an eventful and emotional second half, with he and Cooke both called for unnecessary roughness during a multiplayer altercation following a 49-yard fourth-quarter punt by Cooke.

Titans safety Mike Brown, who had been called for roughing the kicker on Cooke's first punt following Matiscik's third-quarter return, was disqualified following the fourth-quarter altercation.

"It was eventful," Cooke said. "You play football long enough, football stuff happens."

Matiscik called Cooke "my guy," adding "Anytime you see him in the scrum, I got his back. Saw him in the middle of it and had to intervene. I'm not going to say it's fun, but I have his back. I just kind of ran in there trying to get my guy out of the mix. What happened happened. Not necessarily proud of it, but [Cooke]'s my guy and I have his back 'til the end."

Coen said Matiscik and Cooke on Sunday "had an edge, for sure."

"There were some frustrations that were being built up with them rushing us the way they were with the long-snapper issue, and we thought we maybe were roughed or potentially roughed at one point," Coen said. "Proud of those guys for competing, but we've got to continue to be smarter."

  • Jaguars offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen continues to be one of the NFL's most versatile players at his position. Van Lanen, who started at right guard in place of Patrick Mekari Sunday, moved to left tackle when starter Walker Little left the game with a concussion. Van Lanen, who started at right tackle for Anton Harrison in a Week 12 victory over the Arizona Cardinals, started a Week 10 victory over the Houston Texans at left guard and also has started as an extra offensive lineman this season in the team's "big" packages. "That is not easy to go and do for anybody," Coen said. "He goes and does it at arguably one of the hardest positions to play in the NFL, which is offensive line. It's not easy to do. I've got a lot of respect for Cole Van Lanen."
