Lawrence "Has Full Control of the Offense…" | Tuesday Insider Before Week 15 vs. Jets

WK15 TUES INSIDER

JACKSONVILLE – He's good and getting better.

Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence is playing with confidence and efficiency, making key plays at times – and wide receiver Tim Patrick made clear early this week there's a reason the Jaguars' passing offense is improving.

"Honestly, Trevor," he said with a laugh.

Patrick, speaking in the wake of a 36-19 victory over the Indianapolis Colts Sunday, was reiterating a point players made following Lawrence's 244-yard, 2-touchdown performance in the fifth-year veteran's second consecutive game without a turnover.

"Trevor played great," wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. said, with Head Coach Liam Coen saying of Lawrence on Monday: "I thought he rose to the occasion and played at a high level. I thought it was one of his more accurate games, big plays that we needed on critical third downs.

"So hopefully we can continue to ride the momentum."

Lawrence, who has thrown a touchdown pass in 5 consecutive games, ran 4 times for 16 yards Sunday and also created opportunities avoiding pressure before big passing plays.

"Having him back there, you know the play is never truly over," Patrick said. "Maybe if you don't get open in the first window of it, he's going to make something happen so you make sure you get open in that second window.

"Having a guy like that makes it hard for defense to really prepare for us because maybe if you scheme us up on the play, he scrambles out. It's a whole new play and we have another opportunity to get open again."

Next Up in the 'Bank

The Jaguars host the New York Jets in Week 15 at EverBank Stadium on December 14.

Lawrence on Sunday also completed 4 passes of 26 yards or more, with 2 of those completions – a 39-yarder in the first quarter to wide receiver Thomas and a 37-yarder to Patrick in the second quarter – converting third downs into first down to extend touchdown drives.

Lawrence's third-longest completion of the day – a 30-yarder in the third quarter to Thomas – extended a field-goal drive.

"He's facilitating to everybody," Patrick said. "He has full control of the offense. He's running when he needs to run. He's throwing when he needs to throw and obviously the run game and our line. I think we understand what type of team we are and the type of team that we want to be.

"We want to run the ball, we want to be physical and when we need to throw the ball, we're going to throw the ball and we're going to make plays."

Lawrence, after throwing 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions in a 27-24 overtime victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Week 12, has thrown 4 touchdowns with 0 interceptions over the last 2 games. He has registered his first 2 100-plus passer rating games of the season in the last 2 games.

Coen said while there were "no real expectations" of specifically how Lawrence would play in his first season in the head coach's system, "you take it week by week and keep coaching up things that need to get improved upon and working on things that we're doing well."

"You hit strides at different times in different seasons," Coen said. "It's just the way it goes. And try not to overthink it. Try not to dive into too many what-ifs and this-and-thats; you just kind of keep coaching. You keep the standards high and the expectations high."

NOTABLE

  • The Jaguars continue to rank No. 1 in the NFL in run defense through 13 games, holding Colts running back Jonathan Taylor – the NFL's leading rusher – to 74 yards and 1 touchdown on 20 carries Sunday. The Jaguars have yet to allow an opponent to run for more than 100 yards in a game this season and are averaging allowing 82.9 yards per game. "The front seven handles a lot of that," Jaguars cornerback Greg Newsome II said. "They do a great job at setting the edge, shedding blocks and making plays. We have unbelievable linebackers who run sideline to sideline with the best of them." Added Newsome, "Every single game our goal is to be the more physical team. That's what we stand on. That has been our blueprint. It all starts up front. Those guys have been doing a great job this season."

NOTABLE

  • Jaguars cornerback Jarrian Jones on Sunday continued to play at a high level, registering 3 tackles and a fumble recovery that led the Jaguars' third touchdown – a 28-yard run by running back Travis Etienne Jr. Jones for the season has five passes defensed with an interception and five tackles for loss. "He's a baller," Newsome said. "I think he's the most underrated guy in the NFL. He can tackle. He can cover. He can blitz, play inside. He can play outside. That's something I had to do in my career and that's not an easy job to do. He's a hell of a player and I think he's the most underrated corner in the NFL."
