DENVER, Colo. – Trevor Lawrence stayed hot. Very hot.
So did the streaking and very good Jaguars – and as a result, they won a very big December game in very convincing fashion in the toughest of environments.
Lawrence threw 3 more touchdowns and ran for another, and the AFC South-leading Jaguars enhanced their playoff positioning yet again with a 34-20 victory over the AFC West-leading Denver Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High Sunday afternoon.
"Great team win – just thankful that a small-market team like ours can come into a place like Mile High and get it done," Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen said, tongue planted in cheek, with Lawrence adding: "It's a big game and just proud of the guys."
"This team's coming together," Lawrence added. "I'm proud of the guys. We came ready to go."
The Jaguars (11-4) maintained their 1-game lead in the AFC South over the Houston Texans (10-5) and moved to with a game of the Broncos (12-3) for the top seed in the AFC. The Texans beat the 2-13 Las Vegas Raiders, 23-21, in Houston Sunday.
"We just beat the best team," Jaguars safety Andrew Wingard said. "Our offense is on a heater. The best part about us is we don't care. This is not our Super Bowl. Our Super Bowl is the Super Bowl."
Lawrence completed 23 of 36 passes for 279 yards and 3 touchdowns with no interceptions, with 3 different receivers catching touchdowns.
Lawrence completed first-half touchdowns to wide receiver Parker Washington and tight end Brenton Strange, with Washington's touchdown giving the Jaguars a 7-0 first-quarter lead and Strange's touchdown giving the Jaguars a 14-10 second-quarter lead.
The Jaguars, after no first downs on their first two possessions, scored on 6 of 7 possessions after that with 4 touchdowns and 2 field goals.
"Guys just kept battling and making plays," Coen said.
Lawrence's 2 third-quarter touchdowns – a pass to running back Travis Etienne Jr. and a 1-yard run – gave the Jaguars a 31-17 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Lawrence has thrown 12 touchdowns and run for 2 more with no interceptions in the last 4 games. He has 26 passing touchdowns and 7 rushing touchdowns this season.
"The numbers don't lie," Washington said of Lawrence. "He's doing a great job."
Washington caught 6 passes for 145 yards and 1 touchdown, with his 63-yard touchdown setting up Etienne's third-quarter touchdown.
"Obviously, Parker had a great day," Lawrence said.
The Jaguars, who extended their franchise-record scoring 25 or more points to 8 games, have games remaining at the Indianapolis Colts (8-6) and Tennessee Titans (3-12).
The Jaguars have won 6 consecutive games, the second-longest single-season winning streak in franchise history. The Broncos entered Sunday on an 11-game winning streak.
"We know what we bring to the table," wide receiver Jakobi Meyers said. "It's just showing it every week. We're already confident. We just want to put it on tape and keeping earning the respect."
Broncos quarterback Bo Nix completed 28 of 47 passes for 363 yards and 1 touchdown with 1 interception.
The Jaguars registered 1 sack – by rookie defensive end B.J. Green II – and two takeaways Sunday, with defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah recovering a third-quarter fumble and cornerback Jarrian Jones intercepting a pass in the fourth quarter. They entered Sunday with 28 takeaways, second in the NFL.
"We were opportunistic," Coen said of the defense. "We did a great job digging in."
