Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen Sees Major Progress in Trevor Lawrence Ahead of Year 5

060525 Trevor Lawrence Day 10 OTAs

JACKSONVILLE – This is detail stuff. It's also important stuff.

As Liam Coen sees it, that's good stuff for Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence so far this offseason. The fifth-year veteran starter is learning the intricacies necessary to excel in yet another new offense.

That makes the small stuff critical.

"His footwork has dramatically improved," Coen said.

Coen, in his first season as the Jaguars’ head coach, discussed Lawrence's progression extensively following Day 10 of 2025 organized team activities at the Miller Electric Center Thursday.

Footwork and timing are key in Coen's offense – and Coen on Thursday praised Lawrence's development in that area during the offseason program that will end with next week's three-day mandatory minicamp.

"Every system is different," Coen said. "The drop of a quarterback is very similar to a dance. Each song has a different rhythm, each play has a different rhythm, each systems have different rhythms – so continuing to develop that for him [is important]."

Coen also on Thursday re emphasized the importance of footwork and timing in his system, which is Lawrence's third offense in five NFL seasons.

"When the game is being played, we know it's lived in the gray, but we're trying to create black-and-white lines for footwork, for reads, for timing," he said. "When the things start moving, oftentimes you have to revert back to your fundamentals, your footwork, your timing.

"He has taken a step in that area as well as just the overall operation."

Added Coen, "That's what I've really looked for him in this time, really focusing on his lower half and his footwork and then also just running the show. I'm not really judging, 'Does he make every single throw right now? Is every single ball perfectly accurate right now?'

"Is he operating the offense at a high level? Yes, he is. Right now."

  • This is what Dawuane Smoot wanted, which was why he was smiling after practice Thursday. "I want to see the Jaguars and the city win," he said. "This is a city of winners. I'm ready to see it and I wanted to be a part of it. This is a place where I've laid roots, so it all works out." Smoot, a third-round selection in the 2017 NFL Draft who played for the Jaguars from 2017-2023, re-signed Wednesday after spending the 2024 season with the Buffalo Bills. He is expected to add depth and experience to the pass rush, particularly at the edge position. Coen called the move "continuing to add competition to the room, consistency, a guy that obviously has roots in this area and has strong friendships with some of the guys on the team." Smoot, who sustained a torn Achilles late in the 2022 season, said of his health: "We're three years removed now. It's completely different. It was constant work, every offseason, getting my strength back. It's a tough injury to come back from, but since it happened I haven't had any problems with it. I'm good." Of the 2025 Jaguars, Smoot said upon his return he immediately felt "a lot of energy, a lot of positive energy. That's a good thing. Everyone's looking forward to the future, looking for a lot of wins. There's a lot of buzz around the city. I'm looking forward to it."

  • The Jaguars this week also signed linebacker Dennis Gardeck , who spent his first seven seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. Coen as an assistant with the Los Angeles Rams coached against Gardeck from 2018-2020 and again in 2022. "Every time we would go play the Arizona Cardinals, he was on the game-wrecker board," Coen said of Gardeck, who has 17 career sacks and 17 quarterback knockdowns. "He was on there, whether it was originally for special teams, and then also for rushing the passer and creating some disruption." Coen added that Gardeck gives the Jaguars a "special teams demon" and a "little bit different kind of style rusher," adding: "You're just looking at continuing to find guys that can disrupt the game in a specific way." The Jaguars also this week signed wide receiver Trenton Irwin, who spent 2019-2024 with the Cincinnati Bengals. Irwin has 46 career receptions for 601 yards and five touchdowns with 21 career punt returns for an 8.8-yard average. "We're continuing to add competition to the [wide receiver] room and guys that have played some meaningful snaps in the league in a similar system," Coen said. "He has been a great guy to kind of get to know a little bit and he'll continue to learn the offense as we go here."
