Jaguars-Dolphins Joint Practice: Key Observations From an Imperfect but Productive

Campservations Day 19 Thumbnail_v2

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.Jaguars 2025 Training Camp continued Thursday.

It was the 19th day of the first training camp under Head Coach Liam Coen, featuring a two-hour practice with the Miami Dolphins at the Dolphins' Baptist Heath Training Complex. Each day throughout camp, members of Jaguars Media – senior writer John Oehser, senior correspondent Brian Sexton, senior reporter/editor J.P. Shadrick and team reporter Kainani Stevens – will share an observation.

Here are Thursday's "campservations:"

John Oehser, Jaguars Senior Writer…

  • This was far from the Jaguars' cleanest practice of '25 camp, and quarterback Trevor Lawrence's post-practice description of the team's first "joint" practice under Head Coach Liam Coen as feeling "a little sloppy" felt a lot accurate. But while neither Lawrence nor Coen seemed thrilled with the offensive execution in a session that featured a few team periods, a lot of special teams and some specific situational work, Coen and multiple Jaguars players did seem pleased with the experience gained and the intensity shown in spots. Thursday's session started out notably warm before a post-practice shower, and tempers flew early – with Jaguars defensive end Travon Walker ending one one-on-one skirmish characteristically quickly, and with Jaguars running backs LeQuint Allen Jr. and Ja'Quinden Jackson taking on seemingly half the Dolphins' defensive roster in a particularly lengthy kerfuffle. These quickly turned into the normal nothingness of camp "fights," with Jaguars cornerback Jourdan Lewis – himself involved in another minor push and shove – saying afterward with a smile, "I think Coach Liam likes a little scuffle."

Added Lewis, "We had to get it in. I was happy guys were protecting each other and not letting guys fight for themselves. Being together, that's what it's about."

  • Bottom line: This wasn't the most productive joint practice you'll ever see, but it was at least some work against another team – and that was better than nothing as camp grinds to an end.

Brian Sexton, Senior Correspondent…

  • It was a typical South Florida August morning with intense heat and sunshine followed by a driving thunderstorm as practice was wrapping up around noon, which makes sense because on the practice fields in South Florida it was a typical NFL joint practice. Guys looked energized early to finally hit someone different and guys talked afterwards about what should be the last preseason work for many – if not all – Jaguars starters. The Jaguars' offense was somewhat sloppy – but it was that was way for the Dolphins' offense also. The Jaguars' defense was pretty good, with defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton and linebacker Devin Lloyd making play after play against the Miami offense. There was also a spirited scuffle when a couple of Jags rookie running backs tussled with the Dolphins defenders. That drew some energy from both teams as it spilled off the field and into the Dolphins' indoor practice facility. There were three total "skirmishes" in two hours, which is very typical of these outings. A few more days and the preseason will be over. A few more days after that and the roster will be whittled to 53. Then the countdown clock begins to Carolina in Week 1.

  • The Jaguars and Dolphins put together a physical two-hour practice at the Dolphins practice facility Thursday morning. At one point, there was a major altercation on one of the fields with Jackson and Allen in the middle. At one point, some players spilled into the open garage door of the indoor facility. After a few minutes, tempers cooled and the rest of practice continued without incident. The Dolphins were working in their third different joint practice environment of training camp, while the Jaguars only had this one day with another team. In the team work, the starters got the majority of the time, their last competitive work before the regular-season Week 1 game against the Carolina Panthers. Saturday’s game against the Dolphins will determine a few final roster spots and roles, while providing players repetitions and tape prior to roster cuts Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET.

  • Joint practice between the Dolphins and Jaguars was certainly eventful – and at times, productive. I wouldn't categorize it as overly physical, but several skirmishes broke out over the two-hour period. Allen was at the center of the biggest fight, which at one point included the majority of both teams. Rookie wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter did not participate in practice, but Coen said that it was precautionary and went on to say Hunter would have played if it were the season opener against Carolina. I felt both offenses struggled on a hot day in South Florida and I would have liked to see a cleaner performance out of Lawrence. The Jaguars' starters won't play Saturday, so this was our final view of the full training camp squad. I believe most decisions have been made regarding the final 53-man roster and I don't expect too many shocking choices come cut day.
