Jaguars Held Energetic Stadium Scrimmage Under Friday Night Lights

STADIUM SCRIMMAGE WRAP

JACKSONVILLE – As mock games go, this one was fun.

It absolutely had the head coach smiling.

Trevor Lawrence looked smooth and confident, Travis Hunter played both ways and the starters looked very much like starters in the Jaguars' 2025 Stadium Scrimmage in front of 11,000 inside EverBank Stadium Friday night.

"It wasn't perfect, but I thought it was a good start," Head Coach Liam Coen said.

Lawrence, entering his fifth season as the Jaguars' starting quarterback – his first in Coen’s offensive system – played extensively throughout the 81-play "mock game" and completed 19 of 27 passes for 241 yards with three touchdowns with an interception.

"I thought he played awesome," Coen said of Lawrence.

Lawrence threw first- and second-quarter touchdowns to wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr., then threw a 5-yard touchdown to tight end Brenton Strange on the "game's" final play.

"I thought he was making sharp, fast decisions," Coen said of Lawrence. "The ball was getting driven constantly. He missed a few, but I just thought he made good, sharp decisions and drove the ball. He ran the show well. It was a good night for him."

Coen lauded "a ton" of explosive plays on both sides in a session that marked Day 8 of 2025 Jaguars Training Camp.

Jacksonville, Fla. — Jaguars head coach Liam Coen during the stadium scrimmage at EverBank Stadium on August 1, 2025.

"Tonight was maybe a little bit more explosive than I expected us to be in some ways," Coen said. "That was pleasant to see. We have guys that can make explosive plays. It's just tonight maybe it happened a little bit more than it has."

Lawrence's touchdowns to Thomas were for 15 and 4 yards, with the first in the first "quarter" and the second in the "second" quarter. The scrimmage's format meant the first-team offense played against the second-team defense for much of the "mock game," and the first-team defense played against the second-team offense.

The first team "won" the "game," 23-9, with kicker Cam Little converting three total field goals – including one from 58 yards.

"Guys made plays and made some contested catches that they hadn't been making at times," Coen said. "I just thought it was cool to see all groups make some sort of a play. I thought it was well-executed for the most part."

HIGHLIGHTS OF STADIUM SCRIMMAGE

  • Brian Thomas Jr. a Pro Bowl selection last season as a rookie, caught six passes for 65 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Travis Hunter, the No. 2 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft who will play offense and defense extensively this season, started Friday on offense and played 17 plays there before finishing the "game" with 21 defensive plays. He caught three passes for 43 yards. "That's what we were hoping to do tonight in terms of getting him quality work on both sides of the ball," Coen said.
  • Brenton Strange caught five passes for 57 yards, with his touchdown coming on a drive in which the first-team offense played the first-team defense.
  • Wide receiver Dyami Brown – who signed with the Jaguars as an unrestricted free agent from Washington in March – caught four passes for 71 yards, continuing a strong second week of '25 camp.
  • We were running the ball well on offense in general over the last six practices, then tonight to see the pass game open up – and guys get out in space – that was definitely something I was pleased with seeing," Coen said.
  • Coen, too, said he liked the effectiveness of the Jaguars' pass rush Friday.
  • The first defense did a pretty nice job," Coen said. "I thought I felt the pass rush. You definitely felt it. We were chipping, trying to help and it was getting home."

PLAY OF THE DAY

  • There were multiple big plays offensively Friday, but a highlight defensively came early when cornerback Jourdan Lewis made a strong break on a pass to the sideline from backup quarterback Nick Mullens to wide receiver Trenton Irwin. Lewis' leaping interception set up Lawrence's first touchdown to Thomas. The play continued a strong camp for Lewis, who signed with the Jaguars as an unrestricted free agent from the Dallas Cowboys in March.

QUOTABLE

  • Coen: "I thought the guys came out with great energy. It was great to have the fan base here and a lot of people supporting our organization. It's a fast track, too. They did a great job with the surface and I thought our guys felt fast tonight, which I was really pleased with.

INJURY WATCH

  • Veteran defensive lineman Arik Armstead missed Friday's scrimmage with a sore back and is considered day to day. Rookie running back Bhayshul Tuten participated in individual work but was held out of the mock game as a precaution.
