Coen on Defense's Turnover Production That Sealed Jaguars' Win: "Coming in bunches…" | Game That Was

2025 GAME THAT WAS THUMBNAIL

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – They defensive momentum-changers keep coming and coming.

And that's very good for the Jaguars.

The Jaguars on Sunday beat the San Francisco 49ers, 26-21. There were many reasons for the victory, but the biggest was clear: 4 takeaways by a defense that has shown a season-defining knack in the area just one season after being one of the worst turnover-producing NFL teams in recent memory.

"Right now, it's coming in bunches, which is awesome," Head Coach Liam Coen said.

Linebacker Devin Lloyd on Sunday registered two interceptions, his second and third of the season, with those 2 takeaways altering the game's momentum and leading to 10 points. Safety Andrew Wingard also recovered a first-half fumble that led directly to a touchdown.

"We're very opportunistic," Lloyd said. "We have a lot of ballhawks on the defense. The ball's always on our mind. It starts up front, and I think everybody just capitalizes on the opportunities that we have."

The Jaguars, who forced just 9 turnovers last season – including just 8 on defense – forced 3 takeaways in each of the first three games and entered Sunday leading the NFL in the category.

"It starts with practice," Lloyd said. "We always practice taking the ball away, punching the ball out, catching the ball. Everybody always has the ball on their mind. Whenever you're thinking about it all the time, naturally, those plays and those opportunities, you'll be ready for them whenever they present themselves."

The Jaguars' first three turnovers led to 17 points and helped them maintain the lead for all but 8:52 Sunday. The final turnover secured one of the franchise's biggest road victories in recent memory when Jaguars defensive tackle Arik Armstead – playing at Levi's Stadium for the first time since leaving the 49ers in the 2024 offseason after nine seasons – sacked 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy late in the game.

"That was so special," Lloyd said.

Armstead's sack came on first-and-10 from the 50-yard line with 2:52 remaining, with Jaguars linebacker Foyesade Oluokun recovering at the 49ers 47 to secure the victory.

Armstead called the defense's 13 turnovers for the season "a little hard to believe, honestly."

"It is crazy," Armstead said. "It's historic. It's something we talk about and preach, like we want to take the ball away and give the ball back to our offense. We're doing it at an extremely high level now, early in the season."

Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence called the defensive takeaways "huge," with the Jaguars not turning the ball over offensively on Sunday for the first time this season.

"If you less turnovers than the other team, you have a good chance of winning," Lawrence said. "For us, that has been a huge advantage for us, our defense getting a bunch of turnovers. Today, finally, we had a game where we didn't give the ball away. Those things matter. That makes a difference."

Coen said the Jaguars' takeaway trend "isn't just happening."

"There was a play in practice on Friday that it was just a run, and there were five or six guys punching at the ball," Coen said. "It's what they're doing every single day. It's how they're being coached. [Defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile] and his staff have done phenomenal job detailing ball disruption.

"These guys are being intentional about it. The way that they're practicing, the way that they're preaching it, the way that they're holding each other accountable every day in practice in order to make sure that that is getting seen on the practice tape.

"How long it lasts, I don't know, but it's pretty cool to see right now."

NOTABLE WEEK 4 MOMENTS

  • Coen called a discussion between he and 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh after Sunday's game "not a big deal." Saleh on Thursday had said the Jaguars "have a – legally – a really advanced signal-stealing-type system where they always find a way to put themselves in an advantageous situation. They do a great job of it." Coen on Friday declined to discuss the comments in detail and said after Sunday's game he planned to "keep that between us. That's it."

QUOTABLE PRESS CONFERENCE MOMENTS

  • Coen: "Every time we compete, I think we have a chance. Though four weeks, I think we have a chance. There's not a time in a game where you're like, 'Man, this is getting away from us. Even when negative things start to occur and we stall on offense, the defense makes a play. Boom. These guys keep having each other's backs. That's what's pretty cool after four weeks."
