SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Senior writer John Oehser examines five key plays from the Jaguars' 26-21 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in a 2025 Week 4 game at Levi's Stadium Sunday
1. Fuuuuuumble. This was Arik Armstead's moment – a satisfying moment indeed. Armstead, an 11-year veteran defensive tackle for the Jaguars who played his first nine NFL seasons with the 49ers, forced the critical fumble on the critical play Sunday when he strip-sacked 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy on first-and-10 from the 50-yard line with 2:47 remaining. "It was a very special day, one I won't forget," Armstead said. Linebacker Foyesade Oluokun recovered at the 49ers 47-yard-line, with quarterback Trevor Lawrence's 6-yard pass to tight end Hunter Long on third-and-five from the 42 enabling the Jaguars to run out the clock. "You can't write a better script, to be honest," Armstead said. "I woke up today and didn't want to make it bigger than it was. I just lived in the moment and saw what the day had to bring. It was an amazing experience. I obviously have a lot of memories in this building and I just made another one today." Head Coach Liam Coen said Armstead was awarded the lone post-game game ball Sunday. "A play like that was game-changing and had huge implications," Coen said. "That was awesome to see for Arik."
2. All.The.Way. Third-year wide receiver Parker Washington has been one of the Jaguars' most consistent receivers through training camp and the early regular season. On Sunday, he made one of the Jaguars' biggest plays of the early season on special teams. With the Jaguars leading by 6 late in the third quarter, and with the 49ers having inched into the game after trailing by double digits in the first half, Washington – a third-year wide receiver – took a punt at the Jaguars 13-yard line. He then weaved through a gaping hole in the coverage and outran the 49ers to the end zone for an 87-yard touchdown and a 26-14 Jaguars lead with 2:22 remaining in the third quarter. "He stuck his foot in the ground and got vertical," Coen said, with quarterback Trevor Lawrence calling the play "huge" and adding that "special teams made a bunch of big plays today." Running back Bhayshul Tuten also set up a field goal with a 54-yard first-half kickoff return. "Our return game was really positive, obviously," Coen said.
3. THE. The Jaguars took control of the game's momentum with two memorable plays from two athletic players. First, linebacker Devin Lloyd – playing at his highest level of four NFL seasons – corralled a carom off the hands of 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey for his second interception of the season, a play that gave the Jaguars possession with a 7-3 lead at their 11-yard line with 13:02 remaining in the second quarter. "It was one of those plays where you have to keep running," said Lloyd, who added a second interception in the second half and who now has three for the season. "Fortunately, that was on our side and I was able to get the tip." The Jaguars used 13 plays and 8:01 to drive 89 yards, with Lawrence's 4-yard pass to Long extending the lead to 14-3 with 5:01 remaining in the first half. The drive's key play: A leaping, 28-yard reception by rookie wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter, with the No. 2 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft making a spectacular reception to turn third-and-15 from the Jaguars 6 into a first down at the Jaguars 34. "It was a great catch by Travis," Lawrence said.
4. Not to be overlooked. Sunday's first quarter was about little moments that mattered. A key Jaguars defensive play came deep in their territory on the 49ers' first possession when cornerback Jourdan Lewis made a nice play to force a 1-yard loss on a run by McCaffrey, a play that forced the 49ers into third-and-goal from the Jaguars 8 and eventually led to the 49ers settling for a 26-yard field goal by kicker Eddy Pineiro after driving steadily into the red zone.
5. Fuuumble – and a quick strike. Two themes for the Jaguars early this season: A strong running game and a lot of takeaways. The Jaguars leaned into those themes to take a lead early in the second quarter Sunday. The first key moment in this sequence came when Jaguars linebacker Dennis Gardeck stripped 49ers tight end Luke Farrell after a 10-yard pass on the first play of the second quarter, with Jaguars safety Andrew Wingard recovering at the Jaguars 48. Running back Travis Etienne Jr. turned a well-blocked sweep into a 48-yard touchdown on the ensuing play, giving the Jaguars a 7-3 lead with 14:41 remaining in the second quarter. "He's got a really good feel for what we're trying to do in the run game," Coen said of Etienne, who rushed for 124 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries Sunday. "Whether it's in the zone or in gap stuff, Travis just has a really good feel for what we're trying to do. Very pleased with Travis right now and the way those guys are running."
