"Just Finish the Job…" | Game That Was Jaguars' Week 17 Win Over Colts

WK17 GTW

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – This week's task is done. Next week is what matters now.

That's because next weekend for the Jaguars is about clinching the AFC South title, which they can do with a victory at home over their longtime division rivals – the Tennessee Titans.

It's in their control. Just win.

The AFC South-leading Jaguars with Sunday's victory moved to 12-4 and remained a game ahead of the second-place Houston Texans (11-5), who beat the Los Angeles Chargers, 20-16, in Los Angeles on Saturday. The Texans play host to the Colts (8-8) in Week 18.

"It's awesome," defensive end Josh Hines-Allen said. "It's a good feeling to win today, first and foremost. Winning against Tennessee, we got to worry about that on Wednesday."

The Jaguars will clinch the division with a tie or victory against the Titans. They also can clinch with a Texans tie or loss. The Texans will win the division if the teams finish tied because they would have a better record in the division than the Jaguars.

The Jaguars host the Tennessee Titans in Week 18 at EverBank Stadium (date TBD). The team will close out the regular season in their Prowler throwback uniforms.

"Man, it's a big one," cornerback Jarrian Jones. "But we can't get too high, can't get too low. Do the same things we've been doing at practice and keeping the results that we've been getting, I think everything's going to be fine."

The Jaguars have won four division titles in franchise history – the 1998 and 1999 AFC Central titles, and the 2017 and 2022 AFC South titles. They beat the Titans at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville in the regular-season finale to clinch the 2022 South title then lost to the Titans in Nashville in the regular-season finale with a chance to clinch the South the following season.

"We've got to go and finish the job next week," Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence said.

"We need our fans to come out and support and make it a great atmosphere, a tough atmosphere to play in for Tennessee.

"Obviously, it's a huge game, division game against the Titans to win the AFC South. I mean, it's huge. So, we know what we've got to do, and we've got to have a great week of prep and put a good plan together."

Etienne said the key next weekend is "Just execute, finish the job."

"Don't get lackadaisical, just come in ready to play," he said. "Just be who we have been all season. We can't start looking ahead. We've just got to continue to be present."

The Jaguars clinched a playoff appearance Monday, something Head Coach Liam Coen on Sunday wasn't addressed as a team this week.

"We haven't really talked a ton about goals, about the division, playoffs, conference, Super Bowl," Coen said. "We have not had any of those conversations as a team. Not really on purpose, more so just because you're really trying to focus on getting better because there's so much to coach off of every week for us.

"Even through a lot of wins, we're able to coach off a lot of stuff and keeping the mindset pretty singularly on 1-0 each week. That's just been the mindset, a mentality that these guys have had and I've appreciated that and we've fed off of each other that way."

NOTABLE

  • Etienne on Sunday rushed for 76 yards on 17 carries and now has rushed for 1,075 yards with seven touchdowns on 246 carries this season. It marks the third time in four seasons Etienne has rushed for 1,000 or more yards. "It means great team success," Etienne said. "Whenever good things happen for the team good things happen for me. I'm proud of 1,000 yards, but even more proud that I finally got 12 wins in the NFL – first time. I'm just going to keep rolling, just keep being better and being reliable for my teammates."

QUOTABLE

  • Jones: "We are really, really close as a team. You guys have been in the locker room. Y'all kind of see how we talk to each other. Those are really, really my brothers. We're calling each other for everything. We spend a lot of time with each other. We do a lot of things outside of the field together. I think as the weeks go, and we're challenged with different things, I think we continue to grow closer and closer. So, I think the way that we're growing, and you can kind of see the product on the field."

QUOTABLE

  • Lawrence: "We have all the confidence in ourselves that when we play well, when we execute, we can beat anybody. That's all you can ask for. Who cares who thinks who the best team this. We'll get to prove it, come next week first of all, then in the playoffs. We'll all get our shot at one another and you keep winning, you keep playing. We have a lot of confidence in our locker room."
