HC Liam Coen Announces Jaguars WR/DB Travis Hunter Will Be Placed on Injured Reserve

THUNT IR ARTICLE

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars on Friday practiced at the Miller Electric Center.

The Jaguars (4-3) will play the Las Vegas Raiders (2-5) at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev., Sunday in a 2025 Week 9 game. A look at Friday around the Jaguars – with Head Coach Liam Coen speaking to the media for the final time before Sunday:

Travis Hunter will be placed on injured reserve.

Hunter, a wide receiver/defensive back and the No. 2 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, sustained a knee injury in practice Thursday. Coen during his Friday morning media availability announced Hunter will be placed on injured reserve.

"Obviously huge blow," Coen called it.

Hunter under NFL injured-reserve rules will miss at least four games.

"We're currently assessing the injury, just to determine the best course of action moving forward for Travis and for the team," Coen said, adding that it was a "non-contact" injury. "We're still waiting on further information to determine how long it could be."

Travis Hunter, the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner, has played extensively on offense and defense as a rookie – the first NFL player to do so in three decades. Hunter in the Jaguars' last game – a 35-7 loss to the Los Angeles Rams at Wembley Stadium in London before a Week 8 bye – caught a season-high eight passes for 101 yards and his first NFL touchdown.

"You just feel bad for the guy, for the kid, for our team, for everything," Coen said. "He's in good spirits right now."

Coen called the situation "a minor setback for a major comeback," adding, "That's just the way it has to be."

"It's definitely not ideal timing, not that any injury is ever ideal timing," Coen said, "but his makeup, his general attitude towards life, how he handles specific situations … I have a lot of belief in Travis as a person, as a competitor, to come back better than ever. …"

  • With Hunter out, the Jaguars' top three receivers likely will be second-year veteran Brian Thomas Jr., fifth-year veteran Dyami Brown and third-year veteran Parker Washington. The trio has 60 receptions for 766 yards and three touchdowns this season.

Hunter leads the Jaguars with 28 receptions for 298 yards and one touchdown.

"I don't if there's anybody necessarily specific," Coen said. "It's the whole crew, 'Go out and let's go perform.' Go back to training camp days that Travis was on defense. It was Dyami, BT and Parker rolling at the receiver positions and did some really good things.

"I have a lot of confidence in these guys. It's a great opportunity for all of us to work through a little adversity and for the guys to go out and perform at a high level." …

  • Coen said the Jaguars made "some tweaks" in Sunday's game plan following Hunter's injury.

"I'm not saying it's ever easy, but, I do believe and have a lot of confidence that we can [take the approach of], 'Go out, guys. Let's go let it rip. Play. Have fun. Cut it loose,'" Coen said. "It's on us to put them in a position to be successful and the plan has to do that.

"There was a little tweaking that had to be done. The guys all handled it great. I know those guys feel for Trav, but they know what's at stake in terms of the opportunity that they all have."

  • Coen also on Friday discussed the opportunity at hand for Thomas, a Pro Bowl selection last season who has struggled at times with drops this season. Call said Thomas this week practiced "the best I've seen him practice."

"I truly believe that and told him that," Coen said. "I really expect him to show up and make some huge plays for us as we go. He doesn't have to go and be anybody but the best version of BTJ, and that's going to be damn good enough."

Thomas, who in 2024 set franchise-rookie records with 87 receptions for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns, has 27 receptions for 365 yards and one touchdown this season. …

Coen said the Jaguars likely will elevate two players from a practice squad group of receivers that includes third-year veteran Austin Trammell, fourth-year veteran Tim Jones and rookie Chandler Brayboy.

Veteran wide receiver Tim Patrick was ruled out for Sunday with a groin injury.

Coen said the Jaguars are unlikely to make a roster move at cornerback because of Hunter's injury.

"We're already heavy at corner in terms of how many we carry during the game," Coen said. "It's not going to affect that much in terms of a number standpoint at corner." …

Coen also on Friday discussed cornerback Greg Newsome II, who started at corner against the Rams after playing a reserve role in a Week 6 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Campbell was acquired by the Jaguars in a trade for cornerback Tyson Campbell three days before the Seattle game.

"He just feels so much more comfortable with the calls, the communication in the backend with those guys, the comfort level of playing in the system a little bit longer,'" Coen said. "He definitely has a lot of confidence right now. I have a lot of confidence in Greg right now. I think he's going to continue to ascend." …

Safety Eric Murray on Friday was ruled out with a neck injury, with safety Antonio Johnson likely to start Sunday alongside Andrew Wingard.

"I thought he had a really good week of practice," Coen said of Johnson, a third-year veteran whose interception secured a Week 3 home victory over the Houston Texans. "He has been a big part of our dime packages throughout the year, being able to move him around in different positions in terms of playing linebacker, safety.

"He knows, 'Hey man, I have a great opportunity here.' A lot of confidence in him. I think we can look for Antonio to have a good week and step up this week as well." …

The Jaguars on Friday released their third and final injury report of the week, with the following players ruled out:

  • Hunter, Murray
  • Patrick and tight end Quintin Morris (groin)
  • Linebacker Devin Lloyd, the AFC's Defensive Player of the Month for September, was listed as questionable with the calf injury that kept him out of the loss to the Rams.

The following players were listed without status Friday and are therefore expected to be available Sunday:

  • Brown (shoulder)
  • Thomas (shoulder)
  • Linebacker Dennis Gardeck (chest) and cornerback Jourdan Lewis (neck)
