Lawrence on Growth Throughout 2025 Season: "A Lot of Improvements I Can Still Make"

TUES INSIDER

JACKSONVILLE – He made progress, with more to make.

Trevor Lawrence spent the 2025 offseason working to master details, then spent the regular season making dramatic strides – and the Jaguars' quarterback made this much clear in the wake of his best NFL season:

He's not satisfied. Not even close.

"I know there are a lot of improvements I can still make," he said.

Lawrence spoke Monday in the wake of an AFC Wild Card Playoff loss to the Buffalo Bills, a game in which he threw three touchdown passes and twice rallied the Jaguars to fourth-quarter leads. It was a frustrating end to a season in which Lawrence emerged as one of the NFL's top quarterbacks.

"When you have a guy like that, you always have a chance to win," wide receiver Tim Patrick said.

Lawrence, the No. 1 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft, progressed rapidly throughout his fifth NFL season – his first in first-year Head Coach Liam Coen's scheme. Coaches praised him throughout the season for his increasingly strong grasp of Coen's offense, which emphasizes quarterbacks changing plays at the line of scrimmage based on specific defensive looks.

Lawrence's effectiveness accelerated rapidly as the season continued. He threw 29 touchdowns, rushed for nine, and threw nine interceptions – including 19 touchdowns passing and five rushing with five interceptions as the Jaguars won their last eight regular-season games to clinch their first AFC South title since 2022.

"He's tall, he's fast, he's big, he can throw," Jaguars wide receiver Jakobi Meyers said. "He can go wherever he wants to go, truthfully."

Running back Travis Etienne Jr., Lawrence's teammate throughout his NFL career and during their final three seasons at Clemson University, praised Lawrence throughout season – and said often he was playing at the highest level of his career.

He said Lawrence's future progression likely will come from being "cocky."

"Just stop caring what people think in reality," he said. "Just don't give a damn, man. You're the man. Just go out there and be yourself. Make plays and play fearless and reckless, reckless abandon."

Coen spoke to Lawrence about playing freely in that fashion around midseason, counseling the quarterback to "let it rip" and not worry about interceptions. Lawrence threw three interceptions with three touchdowns in an overtime victory over the Arizona Cardinals shortly thereafter, then threw 15 touchdowns with one interception in the final six regular-season games. He was named AFC Offensive Player of the Month for December/January.

"He (Coen) just gave me all the confidence, to know that he had my back," Lawrence said. "I think that's one of the best things, the quarterback to know that the people around you believe in you, that they have your back. He just gave me that freedom, to just cut it loose.

"I think that's a big part of where the improvement came, but it's also just an accumulation of all the reps and everything coming to fruition of just time on task, all the work that is put in kind of comes together. It's our whole offense. It's not just me.

"That confidence from him and from our staff really goes a long way."

Lawrence on Monday said he will evaluate his 2025 season this offseason – and that while he improved in areas such as accuracy, footwork and extending plays in 2025, a priority moving into 2026 will be "continuing to refine" those areas.

"I have to watch it all and see what those exact things are," he said. "I know we're heading in the right direction, but I want to continue to put the work in. I know there's more for me to tap into. It's just the consistency to play like I did toward the end of the year

"I should have made more plays on Sunday when my team needed it. I wish I was able to do that for these guys and we could still be playing, but I know there's more out there for us."

QUOTABLE

  • Cornerback Jourdan Lewis on what makes the Jaguars' 2025 success sustainable: "The buy-in, how easy it was and how seamless. Everybody adapted to the new system. It usually takes a few years when you're building upon something that's new, especially when you have a lot of things that are as detailed on offense and defense that we have on this team. When you saw that, how quickly guys adapted to it and how quickly guys had success no matter who was in there, it shows you it's sustainable and you can build on it."
