Lighter, Fundamental & Educational Work on a Red-Zone Focused Sunday

day 9 snapshot

JACKSONVILLE – This was a day for tradition and culture.

That was fine with Anthony Campanile, the Jaguars' first-year defensive coordinator who spoke to the media Sunday following Day 9 Jaguars 2025 Training Camp at the Miller Electric Center.

Tom Coughlin attended Sunday. And he was a welcome guest.

"What he says matters, and it works; it's right," Campanile said.

Coughlin, the Jaguars' head coach from 1993-2002 and a member of the Pride of the Jaguars, attended practice Sunday and joined Executive Vice President of Football Operations Tony Boselli – who played for Coughlin from 1995-2001 – on the field midway through the two-and-half-hour session.

Campanile and other coaches also spoke with Coughlin after practice.

"I don't think you'd have a better resource in professional football," Campanile said after a practice in helmets and spider pads. "There's a tremendous tradition here, a rich tradition, because of what he did.

"He set the precedent for what the culture should be and we want to have a culture very similar to that – about being tough, doing your job, being accountable, being a great teammate, caring about the people you coach, all that stuff. That's what he's about.

"That's why he has been able to win the way he has, at the rate he has, the entirety of his career."

The Jaguars focused heavily on red-zone work Sunday, a day that was comparatively light in terms of contact. This came two days after an extensive, physical stadium scrimmage Friday night.

"Like most scrimmages at this time of year – some real good, some not so good, some things that we had to correct," he said. "The most important thing coming out of that scrimmage for me was fundamentals. Run-game fundamentals, pass coverage fundamentals and pass rush. Are we coordinated? Are we doing things the way they're supposed to be done? Are we doing things the way we've been practicing them here for the last two, three weeks?

"It's a work in progress, but definitely some good there and some really competitive moments for us on defense."

Working on the weekend. 😤 The Jacksonville Jaguars are getting ready for the 2025 season as they take the field for Training Camp Day 9 at Miller Electric Center. 🏈

👀 Here's a look at Sunday's practice:

PLAY OF THE DAY

  • This came during red-zone work, with quarterback Trevor Lawrence continuing what is becoming a strong '25 camp and with rookie wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter continuing to make impact plays in his first NFL camp. On this play, Lawrence – who threw multiple touchdown passes Sunday in red-zone work – found Hunter in the back left corner of the end zone. Hunter used his athleticism and playmaking ability to make a leaping reception and came down in bounds for a touchdown. The play received perhaps the day's loudest cheer during the open-to-the-public practice.

STANDING OUT

  • Travis Hunter, who will play extensively on both offense and defense, practiced exclusively on offense Sunday after working on both sides of the ball in Friday's stadium scrimmage. Hunter caught several passes Sunday, including the corner-of-the-end zone touchdown in red-zone work. Hunter, who has worked full time on offense in six practices and full time on defense in two practices, participated in 20 snaps Sunday.
  • Wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr.., after catching two touchdown passes in Friday's scrimmage, caught several passes from Lawrence Sunday – including a touchdown in red-zone work.
  • Tight end Brenton Strange, after catching a touchdown pass from Lawrence Friday, caught a touchdown pass from Lawrence Sunday – a nice catch on a well-timed pass from Lawrence that Strange caught over safety Eric Murray.
  • Rookie linebacker Jack Kiser intercepted backup quarterback Nick Mullens and returned the interception for a long touchdown.
  • Safety Andrew Wingard intercepted a pass in red-zone work, diving for the interception at the goal line after Lawrence's pass caromed off Hunter's hands.
  • Tight end Hunter Long had a long reception on a deep pass from Lawrence and also a touchdown reception late in practice in red-zone work.
  • Running backs Tank Bigsby, Travis Etienne Jr. and Ja'Quinden Jackson all had strong runs.
  • Rookie wide receiver Chandler Brayboy had a long reception early in practice on a deep pass from rookie quarterback Seth Henigan.

INJURY WATCH

  • Tight end Johnny Mundt returned to practice on a limited basis Sunday after being out with a lower body issue
  • rookie linebacker Jalen McLeod missed practice and is considered week-to-week with a lower body issue.
  • Remaining out of practice Sunday
