Preseason Work: Footwork and Development of Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence

0814 Camp Wrap

JACKSONVILLE – Progress continues. That's the main objective.

Trevor Lawrence on Thursday said he's moving toward that goal, which is a major storyline – and a major positive – for the fifth-year quarterback as 2025 Training Camp continues.

"It's starting to feel a lot more comfortable and natural," he said.

Lawrence spoke to the media Thursday morning following a two-hour "scrimmage" on Day 15 of Jags '25 camp at the Miller Electric Center, focusing some of his post-practice comments on the footwork changes he has made as he adapts to first-year Head Coach Liam Coen’s offense.

First-year offensive coordinator Grant Udinski on Thursday lauded Lawrence's progress in the area, saying Lawrence has "improved, and he will probably continue to improve."

"That's our goal," Udinski said. "There really is no point where you take your foot off the gas on that stuff. You're always building the fundamentals even throughout the season. The time you can allocate towards that shrinks as the season continues, but he's improved and the goal is that he continues to improve throughout the year."

Lawrence, who said he expects to play against the New Orleans Saints in a Preseason Week 2 road game Sunday, completed six of seven passes for 43 yards on he and the first-team offense's lone series in a 31-25 preseason-opening home loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers this past Saturday.

"We're prepared to go and play a little bit," Lawrence said of Sunday's game at the Ceasars Superdome. "It's just another opportunity for us to get better."

Lawrence said he liked overall his footwork against the Steelers, with one of his major offseason and camp focuses adapting and adjusting to what is needed to excel in Coen's system.

"In the game, a little bit I reverted to some of the old stuff I used to do," he said. "Not a ton, though. I thought it was about what I would expect. That's great practice for me – keeping calm feet, keeping calm eyes, being disciplined with my feet in the pocket, staying in the safe spots, finding those safe spots. I thought overall the game was pretty good, but there were a couple snaps of just bouncing around a little bit that I want to clean up."

Lawrence said improvement has come daily as what is being taught happens more naturally.

"I'm not having to think about it," he said. "I'm not having to say, 'OK, what's my footwork on this play?' I feel comfortable with it. Some of the mechanical stuff that you've done for years – just the way you hitch, the way you transfer weight and some of that stuff – takes a little longer to train out. But we do such a good job of working it in Indy [individual] and all the periods that aren't team periods to where I'm starting to build that muscle memory where I see it carrying over.

"I don't think about it when I'm playing when I'm in team periods or in a game because you don't want to be thinking about what am I doing with my mechanics? You can't play that way. You've got enough to think about.

"We've done a great job of working on it – really, really detailed work in Indy and trying to pinpoint the issues in those periods."

NOTABLE

  • The Jaguars on Thursday worked multiple players at left tackle with the first-team offense. The group included Walker Little, the starting left tackle in Preseason Week 1, and also included: veteran lineman Patrick Mekari, rookie lineman Wyatt Milum, veteran lineman Fred Johnson and veteran lineman Chuma Edoga. "We have had some injuries, guys go in and out, even temporary injuries where guys miss a drive, and those have been opportunities for other guys to step up and play different positions," Udinski said. "We have multiple guys play on different sides, play guard, play tackle, inside, outside, different centers. It's great that those guys have the ability to do that, and we have the chance to get that type of work." Jaguars coaches said throughout the offseason competition along the offensive line would be emphasized in training camp. Udinski added that while the objective is to have a "solidified" starting offensive line, "At the same time, you recognize that over the course of the year, it's very rare nowadays for the five same starters to play every single play for an entire season. This work to get guys working with each other that might not always work together on Week 1 or Week 2 is invaluable to have right now."
