Scout's Take: NFL Media and Jaguars Media Analyst Bucky Brooks Examines Jaguars-Raiders

SCOUTS TAKE WK9

JACKSONVILLE – In a weekly feature for the 2025 season, NFL Media and Jaguars Media Analyst Bucky Brooks breaks down the Jaguars' performance in a 30-29 Week 9 overtime victory over the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev.

BIG IMPRESSION

KEYS TO VICTORY

  • The Jaguars rediscovered their identity as a rough and rugged team against the Raiders. Head Coach Liam Coen's commitment to the running game set the tone for the Jaguars to outwork and outlast the Raiders in an overtime affair. The toll of dealing with the Jaguars' physicality and persistent running game wore the Raiders down, particularly on an exhausting overtime drive that finished with consecutive runs with a group of backups on the field. Though the contributions of Washington (eight catches, 90 yards) and Brian Thomas Jr. (three catches, 55 yards) steadied the aerial attack, it was the Jaguars' success on the ground that fueled the win.

TREVOR'S TIME

  • Hats off to Lawrence for fighting through a nasty illness to lead the Jaguars to a win. The former No. 1 overall pick gutted it out, showing outstanding leadership, toughness and commitment as a QB1. While his numbers (completed 23 of 34 passes for 220 yards with an interception; nine rushing attempts for 24 yards and two scores) do not jump off the stat sheet, they speak to his effectiveness in making plays despite being under the weather.

UNSUNG HERO

  • Etienne quietly finished with 115 scrimmage yards on 27 touches. The heavy workload was not a part of the original game plan, but Coen repeatedly put the ball in the veteran's hands with the game on the line. Etienne's toughness and decisiveness kept the offense on schedule, enabling the Jaguars to control the game with clock-eating drives that resulted in significant advantages in time of possession (42:57 to 26:47) and plays (77 to 60) on the day.

OFFENSIVELY SPEAKING

  • The Jaguars returned to their run-heavy football roots, intent on controlling the game with clock-eating drives. The physicality and toughness (mental and physical) required to play "ground-and-pound" football test the patience of the play caller, but Coen was up to the challenge with his discipline and creativity. With the Raiders forced to defend various option plays, cutback runs and quarterback sneaks, the Jaguars were able to exploit an undisciplined defense that could not stop the run.

DEFENSIVELY SPEAKING

  • It wasn't pretty, but the Jaguars made enough defensive plays to get the job done. Nose tackle DaVon Hamilton swatted away a two-point attempt that was headed in the direction of an open receiver, showing exceptional awareness at the line of scrimmage. Although the Jaguars escaped with a win, the defense has plenty of work to do to clean up the errors that enabled Raiders quarterback Geno Smith (completed 29 of 39 passes for 284 yards with four touchdowns and an interception), running back Ashton Jeanty (89 scrimmage yards and a score on 18 total touches) and tight end Brock Bowers (12 catches, 127 receiving yards and three touchdowns) to enjoy banner days despite their offensive limitations.
