Campanile on Clinching Playoff Spot: "Just Keep Working…" | Tuesday Insider Before Week 17 at Colts

WK17 TUES INSIDER

JACKSONVILLE – They're in, and that's the first step.

Anthony Campanile said that's absolutely true for the playoff-bound Jaguars, and the first-year defensive coordinator said that truth was reflected when the team officially qualified for the 2025 postseason.

The moment was cool, then the preparation continued.

"It was, 'Just keep working,'" Campanile said with a laugh.

The Jaguars (11-4), winners of six consecutive games and seven of the last eight, clinched the ninth postseason appearance in franchise history when the Indianapolis Colts lost to the San Francisco 49ers, 48-27, Monday.

"We have a lot of work to do and we've got our hands full this week, so there's not a lot of time for celebration right now," Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski said Tuesday. "When the time's appropriate, I'm sure we'll sure we'll celebrate, but right now we're focused on preparation.

"Not a lot of celebration going on, but definitely a lot of work to do."

Udinski, Campanile and the rest of the Jaguars' coaching staff were at the Miller Electric Center Monday night preparing for Sunday’s game against the Colts (8-7) at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

The Jaguars can clinch a third AFC South title in nine seasons with a victory Sunday if the second-place Texans (10-5) lose to the Los Angeles Chargers (11-4) in Los Angeles Saturday.

"Everybody was kind of working on the next game but had the TVs going in their office," Campanile said. "Everybody had the TV up with the current game rolling. I think everybody was kind of on the same plan.

"I'm glad that happened, but we're so focused on this current game it didn't affect what I was doing at the time. We've been trying to grind it and get this thing right and get prepared for this next game but definitely fired up about the opportunity to go ahead and continue playing."

Next Up in the 'Bank

The Jaguars host the Tennessee Titans in Week 18 at EverBank Stadium (date TBD). The team will close out the regular season in their Prowler throwback uniforms.

The Jaguars have won five division titles in franchise history – the 1998-1999 AFC Central titles, the 2017 AFC South title and the 2022 AFC South title. They were an AFC Wild-Card team in 1996-1997, 2005 and 2007.

"We do the things we need to do and we just need to keep being us," Jaguars tight end Brenton Strange said. "That's the biggest thing is just keep being us, week in and week out, doing what we need to do to prepare and everything else will take care of itself.

"You can't really say anything until it's all over that final whistle in that final game, so we're not looking ahead. We're going to be where our feet are, but I think that we have the confidence, and I think that we know what we have in this building."

The Jaguars also still have a chance at the No. 1 seed if they win their final two games and the No. 1-seeded Denver Broncos (12-3) and No. 2-seeded New England Patriots (12-3) both lose at least one game. The Jaguars play host to the Tennessee Titans (3-12) in Jacksonville in a Week 18 in a game expected to have significant seeding or division implications.

"The resilience, the ability to respond each week has been impressive," Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen said. "They know they're not going to get too much respect in general from the league. And so, look, these guys are competitive.

"They're competitive against each other and with each other, they're competitive with their peers that play on other teams and around the league. And so, I think that's ultimately what fuels them."

NOTABLE

  • Jaguars defensive end Travon Walker drew praise this week from both Campanile and Coen, with Walker rushing and playing the run effectively while playing extensively on the interior. Walker had three quarterback hits in a victory over the Denver Broncos Sunday and has a tackle for loss in each of the last three games, with Coen saying of his performance against the Broncos, "Travon played very well. He played with his hair on fire. He was relentless, made some critical stops for us, both from the end and from inside." Said Campanile, "You're just trying to get the best matchups possible. He has a really special skillset. There's not a lot of people who are capable of doing what he's capable of having done. It's really his ability that gives us the opportunity to do that. And hopefully we're looking to put him in the best possible situation when it comes to those pass-rush situations."

QUOTABLE

  • Coen: "So many people here do want to prove something. There are a lot of first-timers in roles. There are a lot of players that, whether they came in via free agency, the draft, whether they're here already, whatever that case is … it's a group of guys that are proving something. Whether it's for a contract, whether it's for wins, whatever it is … all those reasons make up our edge. That's something that we've talked about a lot from the moment we got together is having an edge as a team and yeah … not really caring too much about the outside noise."
