Coen Talks The Day After Week 10 Loss at Texans: "We can't relive the moment…"

DAY AFTER W10

JACKSONVILLE – What's done is done and what's next is next.

As Head Coach Liam Coen sees it, what's next is all that matters in the wake of the Jaguars' most heartbreaking loss of the 2025 season to date.

"This game can't beat us again," he said.

Coen spoke to the media Monday, a day after the Jaguars squandered a 19-point fourth-quarter lead in a 36-29 loss to the Houston Texans – the largest lost lead in a loss in franchise history. Defensive tackle Arik Armstead, speaking after Coen, agreed and said the Jaguars must "turn the page" and "flip the script."

"Whether you like it or not, we have another game coming up here in six days," Armstead said of the Jaguars’ game against the Los Angeles Chargers (7-3) at EverBank Stadium Sunday. "Lingering about what happened this last game isn't going to do anything for the Chargers.

"You learn from your mistakes. You get things cleaned up and then you move on. We're still in a very good position, with our season ahead of us. You turn the page and get back to work."

Wide receiver Parker Washington, who scored two of the Jaguars' three touchdowns Sunday on a punt return and a pass reception, said the key to moving forward is "remembering who we are."

"We did all our corrections [Monday], and then we got together as a unit and we started to show all our 'identity' plays of who we can be and who we are," Washington said. "That was a good way to wipe this away and move forward to know that we can be special.

"We just have to keep trusting each other, keep coming together as a team and get out there on Sunday, have some fun – and most importantly, continue to make plays."

The Jaguars (5-4), losers of three of the last four games after a three-game early-season winning streak, hold the seventh and final "playoff" spot in the AFC. They are two-and-a-half games behind the AFC South-leading Indianapolis Colts (8-2) with eight games remaining.

"We can't relive the moment," Coen said. "We can't change anything about the outcome of yesterday. It sucks, it's brutal. But this is the NFL. The real adversity, the real response to gut wrenching, tough losses like this. Everything is in front of us. We have every opportunity to go win this week. That's all that matters. We've got to win this week.

"When the players get back in the building [after a day off Tuesday], we are preparing for another opponent. We have to get this tape fixed and corrected and moved on, but I'm not worried about losing the team by any means."

The Jaguars, after finishing 3-10 in one-score games in 2024, are 4-3 in such games this season. Coen on Monday called the fourth quarter against the Texans – in which the Jaguars were outscored 26-0 and outgained 167-11 – "maddening, for sure."

"I didn't feel like we had enough edge yesterday," he said. "I think we've shown to have the edge at times. You're on the right side of some of those games going into yesterday and then you have a 19-point lead in the fourth quarter.

"We didn't have our edge in the fourth quarter yesterday, and that's what's very disappointing about that game. But the beauty of this league is we have an opportunity on Sunday to regain that edge into, 'Hey, if we're in that moment again, let's see how we respond.'''

NOTABLE

  • Tight end Brenton Strange is eligible to return from injured reserve, with Coen on Monday saying the team likely will open his 21-day window to return this week. Strange has been on injured reserve since sustaining a hip injury in the Jaguars' Week 5 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. "He is very eager to get out there and compete and play and make an impact on our offense like he was doing before he got banged up," Coen said. "Trying not to put a ton of huge expectations on him or different pressures. It's more so just, 'Hey, let's get you out there and get practicing again, get catching the ball from the quarterback again, to see how to see what it looks like.' We're obviously hopeful but have to take it day-to-day." Strange, a second-round selection by the Jaguars in the 2023 NFL Draft, had 20 receptions for 204 yards in the first five games and is also a key to the run offense.
