JACKSONVILLE – Pads popped and intensity rose.
And if Monday's Day 5 Jaguars 2025 Training Camp practice perhaps wasn't quite as long or quite as intense as what it is to come, the first day in pads brought the expected accompanying noise and energy.
The hitting began, which meant it felt more like football.
"It was awesome," center Robert Hainsey said.
The Jaguars worked for about an hour, 15 minutes in near 90-degree temperatures Monday at the Miller Electric Center. They held individual drills, with a period of one-on-one pass rush and also moved quickly into full-team contact work in the day's fifth period.
"I was pleased," Head Coach Liam Coen said.
It was the Jaguars' first day in pads in '25 camp.
"It was good to be back -- good to be back, banging, working on stuff, working on real football and being able to use the technique and fundamentals that you actually use when you go into a game," Hainsey said. "Excited to be rolling again."
The early team period and a later team period featured heavy hitting, with coaches emphasizing players not tackling or hitting all the way to the ground for safety reasons.
"I thought that the offense came out, and they kind of set the tone a little bit offensively in the run game throughout the course of the day," Coen said. "There were still some good plays here and there on both sides. I was pleased to see physicality, but taking care of one another. It didn't get sloppy or stupid. It was just good quality work. We put the pads on. It doesn't mean we have to cheap shot each other or do anything ridiculous.

"I thought it was just good quality work for both sides and got our first day of pads in."
Monday's work featured helmets and shoulder pads, with Coen saying a longer practice is expected Tuesday in full pads.
"We cut it a little bit short today," Coen said. "We got the good work that we wanted in pads. We're limited to the time when you do put the pads on and the last thing I wanted to do was make it sloppy just by adding another 12 plays or so.
"Tomorrow (Tuesday), we'll probably keep that period that we had up today and be able to get a little bit extra work."
👀 Here's a look at Monday's practice:
PLAY OF THE DAY
- Monday's work focused heavily on the run on first day in pads, but quarterback Trevor Lawrence had an early highlight play when he found wide receiver Joshua Cephus – who continues a strong early camp – deep down the right sideline for a 35-to-40-yard gain. This came shortly after Lawrence found wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. near the sideline on an intermediate route, a reception that Thomas turned into a long gain down the sideline.
STANDING OUT
- Defensive end Josh Hines-Allen made a strong case for play of the day during a late team drill, dropping in coverage and separating tight end Brenton Strange from the ball after a reception deep down the middle on a pass from Lawrence. Rookie safety Caleb Ransaw recovered for the defense.
- Rookie wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter – the No. 2 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft – practiced on offense after working the previous two practices on defense and camp's first two practices on offense. He participated in 12 plays – all in 11-on-11 work and caught one pass.
- Hines-Allen and end Travon Walker had strong days in one-on-one pass rush against tackles Walker Little and Anton Harrison
- Running backs Tank Bigsby and Travis Etienne Jr. had strong runs in team periods, and rookie LeQuint Allen Jr. continued to have a strong camp with multiple strong runs in team periods.
- Wide receiver Parker Washington made a nice, leaping reception on an intermediate pass from backup quarterback Nick Mullens.
- Rookie wide receiver Cam Camper had an intermediate reception on a pass from reserve quarterback John Wolford and rookie wide receiver Chandler Brayboy had a long reception on a crossing route from rookie quarterback Seth Henigan.
INJURY WATCH
- Rookie running back Bhayshul Tuten missed practice with a hamstring issue. Cornerback Montaric Brown remained out of practice Monday with a lower leg injury, and guard Patrick Mekari missed a second consecutive practice after leaving Friday's practice with back spasms. Wide receiver Louis Rees-Zammit (lower back) again missed practice, as did tight end Johnny Mundt (upper body).
- Defensive tackle Maason Smith and linebacker Dennis Gardeck remain on the physically unable to perform list to start camp, with Smith's injury undisclosed and Gardeck having sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament with the Arizona Cardinals last season. Coen said Smith and Gardeck remain on track, with none of the aforementioned injuries considered long-term.
