JACKSONVILLE – Liam Coen didn't love Friday's practice.
He also didn't dislike it enough to worry much, with the Jaguars' first-year head coach discussing Day 3 of Jaguars 2025 Training Camp with perspective.
No, there weren't a ton of offensive highlights. There also wasn't any panic.
"I don't necessarily think it was a bad day; it's just we didn't make any plays," Coen said.
The Jaguars on Friday practiced for an hour-and-fifty minutes in temperatures around 88 degrees at the Miller Electric Center. They remained out of pads because of NFL rules mandating a four-day "ramp-up"period at the start of training camp.
The Jaguars on Sunday are expected to practice once more in helmets and "spiders" – the same as Friday's practice – after a mandatory off day Saturday. The first padded practice is scheduled on Day 5 Monday.
"A lot of the guys you could tell want the pads on," Coen said. "They just want to get to that point. It feels like we've been in T-shirt, shorts for a long time now – and, they're right. They are. It's not quite football. It's still not.
"Football is, as we all know, a very physical game, and it's meant to be played that way. Ultimately, you can't really do it until you get the pads on."
Here's a look at Friday's practice:
PLAY OF THE DAY
- On a day of limited big plays for the offense, Friday's highlight perhaps came late in practice from a veteran defensive player. Linebacker Chad Muma, practicing with a cast on his right hand, intercepted a pass from starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence that was tipped at the line of scrimmage. The fourth-year veteran, originally a third-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft, returned the interception for what would have been a touchdown.
"With one hand … thank God it hit him in the chest," Coen said. "We got tipped. He (Lawrence) was throwing the ball down the field to [wide receiver] Parker [Washington]. It gets tipped right into Chad's hands. Those are the moments where you're (mad) at first and then, 'Hey, good job, Chad.' We've just had too many tip balls in general over the last few days, whether it's the offensive line's got to get their hands down, quarterback's eyes have to be better … that's happened a few times now."
STANDING OUT
- Washington continued a strong start to '25 camp, catching two touchdown passes in seven-on-seven work. One touchdown came when he fought into the end zone at the pylon and the other came when he made an impressive catch in the middle of the end zone on a high-velocity throw from Lawrence.
- Running back Tank Bigsby had a strong practice and led it off with a strong run up the middle for a long gain in early 7-on-7 work; he also had a long gain on a screen pass from backup quarterback Nick Mullens.
- Rookie undrafted free agent wide receiver Eli Pancol caught two touchdown passes in red-zone work.
- Second-year cornerback Jarrian Jones had an impressive play in coverage on second-year wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. in red-zone work.
- Running backs Travis Etienne Jr., Bhayshul Tuten and LeQuint Allen Jr. all had strong runs at various times in practice.
- Cornerback Jourdan Lewis broke up a pass for tight end Hunter Long, who also caught a long pass from reserve quarterback John Wolford.
- Linebacker Ventrell Miller separated Long from a pass in seven-on-seven.
KEY STORYLINE
- Coen on Washington: "Really good start. I've been pleased with Parker. I think if you're talking about guys that've gone up and made plays when the ball has been in the air, he's done it and he's got the right mindset. He approaches work the right way every day. He's strong. He can work second level releases on people when they try to get hands on him. I've been very pleased with Parker the last few days."
INJURY WATCH
- Veteran guard Patrick Mekari left practice briefly Friday with what Coen called "back spasms" and Coen said he is expected to be fine. Jaguars veteran cornerback Montaric Brownmissed practice for a second consecutive day Friday with a lower leg injury and tight end Johnny Mundt missed practice after leaving practice Thursday. Coen said Mundt is considered "day to day." Defensive tackle Maason Smith and linebacker Dennis Gardeck remain on the Physically Unable to Perform list to start camp, with Smith's injury undisclosed and Gardeck having sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament with the Arizona Cardinals last season. Defensive tackle Arik Armstead has participated early in camp on a relatively limited basis. "We're just kind of giving him a little bit of a veteran start," Coen said.
