Signs of Growth as Jaguars Prep for Scrimmage

Day 7 Campservations

JACKSONVILLE – Jaguars 2025 Training Camp continued Thursday.

It was the seventh day of the first training camp under Head Coach Liam Coen, featuring a 90-minute practice in helmets and "spider" pads at the Miller Electric Center. Each day throughout camp, members of Jaguars Media – senior writer John Oehser, senior correspondent Brian Sexton, senior reporter/editor J.P. Shadrick and team reporter Kainani Stevens – will share an observation.

Here are Thursday's "campservations:"

  • Consider this a bit of an in-between day, with a relatively short practice one day after an off day – and one day before a Friday night scrimmage inside EverBank Stadium. The Jaguars held a nine-period practice Thursday, with a long period midway through practice focused on the offense working against its own goal line with the ball placed at its 1-yard line. The offensive line showed stoutness in the run game in this drill, with backs such as rookies LeQuint Allen Jr. and Ja'Quinden Jackson turning in strong runs. Guard Chuma Edoga continues to fare well in place of Patrick Mekari, who remains out with a back issue. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who has had a solid camp thus far, appeared to have a good day and completed a long pass to wide receiver Parker Washington coming out of the offense's own goal line. He also completed a long touchdown pass to wide receiver Dyami Brown later in practice in addition to several big-time throws for first downs in other situations. Onward to Friday's scrimmage, which will be worth watching as the Jaguars will get close to live football for an extended period eight days before next Saturday's preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers at the 'Bank.

  • I don't want to get too far ahead of the story, but I thought Lawrence made a couple of spectacular throws on Thursday. I've been waiting to see him have an amazing practice –and while he has been good, he hasn't been off-the-charts good or amazing yet. A throw to Brown Thursday on a deep route was beautiful, Brown had a step on the defender and Lawrence put it right in the basket. Later in practice, the offense was working off its goal line, backed up and with the defense all over the line of scrimmage, and Lawrence avoided pressure and made an excellent sideline throw to wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. that had the entire coaching staff smiling and nodding their heads. We've heard about the strong test score on the day Lawrence reported to camp, the way he has picked up the offense from coaches and players' first-hand observations. On Thursday, we got a glimpse of the guy they're hoping to have in September – and perhaps in January as well.

  • The Jaguars worked in spider pads Thursday and worked through a few situations, including a backed-up scenario. Washington made a deep catch along the right sideline, while Brown continues to flash in camp. How the running back room plays out will be intriguing. Travis Etienne Jr. and Tank Bigsby are working well, but the three rookies – Bhayshul Tuten, Allen and Jackson – have all flashed throughout the first two weeks. Tuten was back on the field Thursday working back from a hamstring issue. The Jaguars move into the stadium Friday night for the scrimmage, and I'm excited to see how Coen organizes it.

  • The second week of camp continued Thursday with the team's first practice closed to fans. The offense utilized the team periods to go over some specific situational plays, including a lengthier walkthrough period before practice began. The running back competition is strong as each back seems to be contributing in different categories. Etienne is embracing his opportunities in the passing game, while Allen is by far the best pass blocking running back on the roster. Tuten returned to practice Thursday after missing time with a sore hamstring and his trademark speed didn't look hampered by the injury. The focus on the run game has been apparent since the first day with this new regime. Consequently, Lawrence is benefitting from what looks to be a more balanced offensive scheme. Looking forward to seeing it in action in Friday's scrimmage.
