Two-Way Rookie Travis Hunter Talks Readiness for Week 1: "I have to just go play..."

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars on Thursday practiced at the Miller Electric Center.

The Jaguars will open the 2025 regular season against the Carolina Panthers at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville Sunday. A look at Thursday around the Jaguars – with offensive coordinator Grant Udinski, defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile and wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter speaking to the media:

Hunter is ready for Week 1 – and if the Jaguars aren't yet saying how much and where he will play on Sunday, know this: He'll play both ways and he's excited.

"I knew it was coming; it was only a matter of time," Hunter said. "I have to just go play. There's only one thing right now and that's football."

Hunter, the No. 2 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, is expected to play a more significant role as two-way player – offense and defense – than any NFL player in the last three decades. He worked extensively at both positions in training camp before being hampered by an upper-body injury through much of late August.

The Jaguars listed Hunter as a starting wide receiver on the Week 1 unofficial depth chart. He is listed as a backup cornerback but figures to play extensively in passing situations.

"He was well-coached in college, but he has made a really big jump and big progression from where he started to where is now," Campanile said. "He's continuing to evolve. He's doing a good job. He's doing the extra. I'm impressed with that and it's all from hard work. It's good to see."

Udinski on Thursday lauded Hunter's development and quick grasp of the offensive scheme.

"For any rookie usually the most strides are going to be mentally, learning a new system," Udinski said. "Whether it's coming from a spread system in college or a pro system in college, there's a lot to learn. It's certainly a testament to his work ethic … his commitment to putting in extra time and effort, wanting to meet with coaches extra being so eager to learn and improve."

"It's a real testament to his growth mindset and all the work and focus that he puts in."

Jaguars defensive tackles Arik Armstead and Maason Smith are 100 percent healthy and ready for Week 1 – this after each player missed extensive time in the preseason.

Armstead missed much of camp with a back issue and Smith spent the first weeks of camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Both players returned to full practice the week of the preseason finale against the Miami Dolphins.

"Even in the joint practice in Miami, I felt like they were champing at the bit," Campanile said. "They're going. They're practicing their butts off. They've been locked in in the meetings. I'm excited to get them going."

This from Campanile Thursday: "I'm just fired up. I'm excited for these guys. I'm living in that world. I'm fired up for the players and ready to get going."

Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence this week expressed "a lot of confidence" in the Jaguars' offensive line, a group that figures to be a major storyline following a 2025 Training Camp that featured competition at most – if not all – positions.

The projected starting offensive line:

Hainsey and Mekari signed as unrestricted free agents in March, with Cleveland, Little and Harrison starting at their positions last season.

"That group has done a great job, just buying in," Lawrence said. "Obviously we have some new guys. What they've brought to the room has been really big. Seeing the guys come together has been cool and getting to know some of those guys better."

Multiple linemen worked at multiple positions throughout camp.

"The guys having to rotate in gives me more confidence," Lawrence said. "God forbid anything happens to anyone, but seeing seven, eight and nine guys play together and play pretty well gives you a lot of confidence as a quarterback. The five that are going to run out there on Sunday, I have all the faith in. I've got their back and they've got my back."

The Jaguars issued their second injury report of the season Thursday, with rookie offensive lineman Wyatt Milum listed as not practicing for a second consecutive day with a knee injury, veteran offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen listed as practicing limited for a second consecutive day with a shoulder injury and veteran cornerback Montaric Brown listed as not practicing for a second consecutive day with an ankle injury.
