Jaguars Defensive Line Taking Shape, Day 17 of Training Camp

JACKSONVILLE – The defensive front is getting healthier.

That made Tuesday a good day – and an important day – at defensive tackle for the Jaguars, with Arik Armstead and Maason Smith practicing together for the first time during 2025 Training Camp.

"To see them out there is a good sign," Head Coach Liam Coen said.

Armstead, an 11-year veteran expected to start at tackle this season after playing mostly end during his first Jaguars season last season, missed much of the first part of camp with a back issue. Smith, a second-round selection by the Jaguars in the 2024 NFL Draft, was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list last Thursday.

"Great to see Arik out there – and Maason," Coen said. "Both guys have done everything they can in order to get on the grass. I'm really happy obviously for them to be out there, and both guys have done nothing but work their tails off to get back.

"Pleased about that progress, for sure."

The Jaguars on Tuesday morning held a comparatively short, light practice in shorts and helmets on Day 17 of camp – two days after a 17-17 tie with the New Orleans Saints in a Preseason Week 2 game in New Orleans. They will practice tomorrow in Jacksonville with a joint practice with the Miami Dolphins in South Florida scheduled Thursday.

The Jaguars will play the Dolphins in the Preseason Week 3 preseason finale at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla., Saturday at 7 p.m.

"It will be very similar to our practices," Coen said of Thursday's practice, adding that he spoke to Dolphins Head Coach Mike McDaniel regarding the practice Tuesday morning. "They already have had a few, especially a few physical ones, so not sure it will be maybe as much as we fully would like in terms of that, because we're on different schedules than them.

"They've already had a few physical joints. We're just trying to go down and get some really quality work against another opponent."

Coen said he has yet to decide on playing time for Saturday. The first-team offense and defense both played one series in a preseason-opening loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers before both played two series against the Saints.

Coen said Thursday's practice won't change the playing-time approach for Saturday.

"It will be good work against another quality opponent down in the heat," he said. "We're still going to get good work in. Anytime you go in joint, especially our guys not having one yet, I'm sure they'll be juiced up to go against somebody else. So, I'm not really worried about us not getting quality work."

Coen on Tuesday also reiterated what he said following Sunday's tie – that he overall was pleased with quarterback Trevor Lawrence's performance in the game.

Lawrence in two series completed eight of 10 passes for 76 yards and a touchdown, leading two extended drives – a 52-yarder on the opening possession that ended when Lawrence fumbled handing off to running back Tank Bigsby and a 55-yarder on the ensuing possession that Lawrence ended with a seven-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Parker Washington.

"You're just trying to get the ball out, keep it moving, completion mindset throughout just to see us operate instead of saying, 'We're going to just launch the ball deep and scheme some stuff up,''' Coen said. "It's more about getting through progressions, seeing the defense, seeing the coverages, making the proper protection calls up front.

"We talked about the turnover, which is something we can't have, but I was pleased with his outing."

Lawrence has completed 14 of 17 passes for 119 yards on three preseason series, with all three drives covering 40 or more yards. The lone first-team offensive possession in Preseason Week 1 ended with a field goal.
