Jaguars Scrimmage Recap: Competition, Passion & Minor Improvements Needed

0814 Camp Scrimmage Recap

JACKSONVILLE – OK in spots, not nearly as OK in others.

The Jaguars held their second "scrimmage" of 2025 Training Camp at the Miller Electric Center Thursday morning – with starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence assessing the intense, two-hour session essentially in that fashion.

There was some good all around, but perhaps not often enough.

"We've just got to get better and cleaner," Lawrence said.

The Jaguars, who will play the New Orleans Saints at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, La., in a Preseason Week 2 game Sunday, practiced in pads for a second time in three days on Day 15 of '25 camp Thursday. They will hold a lighter practice Friday.

"It's good work," Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski said. "Good to get the work and a lot to improve. I think the guys know that. We know that. I'm excited to dig into the tape and see what we can work on."

Thursday's work had more of a "live," scrimmage feel than most camp practices, with the first-team offense and first-team defense – and the second-team offense and second-team defense – working against one another in multiple "full-field, full-quarter" situations.

"I thought there was some good competition, guys flying around," Lawrence said. "There were some good, some bad. We'll watch it. We'll learn from it all."

The Jaguars' first-team offense had a strong early drive Thursday, after which Lawrence said the "defense picked it up a bit." The Jaguars' offense for the day appeared to have seven dropped passes, with the team committing 10 penalties overall.

Lawrence called the practice "a little sloppy offensively."

"We had some mistakes – just self-inflicted wounds," Lawrence said. "It has kind of been the story of camp, trying to clean up some of that stuff pre-snap. Just have to clean up the operation, the mistakes that the defense doesn't inflict on you, you do on yourself.

"It was good competitiveness out here, guys going at it, competing, trying to make each other better. I thought that was positive today."

Lawrence called many of Thursday's issues "pre-snap stuff."

"There's always a little bit of that in camp, but the amount we've had has been a little too sloppy for the offense that we want to be," Lawrence said. "If we want to be a great offense, you have to be really smart, not make those mistakes that hurt yourself. Obviously, execute. The execution has been actually decent once the ball is snapped, but the other stuff before the snap … you don't ever get a chance if you don't do that right.

"There has been some stuff that we just have to lock in on the details. It's all of us in it. We just have to be sharper."

👀 Here's a look at Thursday's practice:

PLAY OF THE DAY

  • This wasn't a day with many standout plays, but one came late from a second-year player who has had a strong camp. Cornerback Jarrian Jones, who has impressed throughout camp with his approach off the field and his play on it, broke up a deep pass from Trevor Lawrence to wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. Jones leaped to knock the pass from Thomas, who had a chance for a leaping catch down the sidelines. Jones celebrated by crossing his arms to signify incomplete pass, with defensive teammates celebrating after what was the day's last play.

STANDING OUT

  • Rookie wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter, two days after practicing solely on defense, practiced 16 plays on offense and 17 on defense Thursday.
  • Rookie free-agent wide receiver Darius Lassiter caught two passes, including a diving catch on an in route that was one of the better catches of '25 Jaguars camp. Lassiter was shaken up on the reception, but returned to practice.
  • Lawrence found Brian Thomas Jr. for a, short touchdown pass in the red zone late in practice. Thomas appeared frustrated at times early, throwing his helmet once.
  • Wide receiver Dyami Brown continued a solid camp and had a strong run on a jet sweep later in practice.
  • Running back Travis Etienne Jr. had a nice gain on a screen from Lawrence midway through practice.
  • Cornerback De'Antre Prince had a pass breakup on a deep pass from backup quarterback Nick Mullens.
  • Rookie running back Bhayshul Tuten continued a strong run of recent practices with a 20-yard reception on a pass from Mullens.

INJURY WATCH

  • Jaguars right tackle Anton Harrison left practice midway through with an undisclosed injury.
  • Also on Thursday, the Jaguars activated second-year defensive tackle Maason Smith from the Physically Unable to Perform list – where he had been since the start of camp with an undisclosed injury.
