JACKSONVILLE – Monday's work was a bit lighter, and a bit shorter.
And with players perhaps bit sore two days after their first game in a long time, Day 13 Jaguars Training Camp Monday had a reflective and in-between feel – with more padded work coming soon and with Head Coach Liam Coen taking a brief look back.
The look back was on a preseason opener that Coen said featured too many penalties.
"Ultimately, we're not playing the game as coaches," Coen said Monday, two days after the Jaguars committed eight penalties for 49 yards in a 31-25 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the ’25 preseason opener at EverBank Stadium.
"We can only say so much. At some point the players do need to take the ownership being out there. So much of what we have talked about is until we kind of don't beat ourselves we're probably not going to be able to consistently beat anybody."
Coen spoke Monday following a 90-minute Day 13 practice at the Miller Electric Center. It was a practice in shorts and helmets, and one that featured a 40-play "alignment/assignment period," with the first-year head coach calling the focus "getting our cleats in the ground when we have a call – on both sides of the ball – just getting the call, getting our cleats in the ground, making loud and guttural communication, getting the calls in quickly."
"That was what we really kind of focusing on from an emphasis standpoint," he said, adding of Saturday, "It was disappointing to see some of the communication errors that we did have, but also just alignment and assignment issues.
"We have new systems on both sides of the ball. It's going to probably take a little bit more than a preseason game to correct some of the things we want to get corrected and play as sound we'd like to play."
Coen, who said he liked the physicality and performance in the run game – and run defense – Saturday, lauded a late fourth-down stop on defense and late stop by the defense in a four-minute situation.
"When it mattered, there were some nice plays and some good effort," Coen said.
Coen also on Monday reiterated what he said following Saturday's game – that he liked the play of quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
Lawrence completed six of seven passes for 43 yards on the game's opening drive, a series that featured two Jaguars penalties and that ended with a 41-yard field goal by kicker Cam Little. Lawrence and the Jaguars' first-team offense did not play Saturday after the first series.
"It was solid," Coen said of Lawrence's first game in Coen's offensive system. "He went out and did his job. He operated well. We didn't ask him to go do too much. It was just solid from an operations standpoint, for sure."

👀 Here's a look at Monday's practice:
PLAY OF THE DAY
- With Monday's work light and short compared to what is expected Tuesday and Thursday, the day was also light and short on standout plays. One notable play came during an extended 40-play team period, with Lawrence finding rookie wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter on a deep out route for a 25-to-30-yard gain. Hunter, as he did Saturday in the preseason game, worked on both offense and defense in practice Monday. He had 20 offensive plays Monday and seven on defense, with Coen saying Hunter likely will work more on defense in practice Tuesday and work on both sides in what is expected to be a scrimmage Thursday.
STANDING OUT
- Running back Travis Etienne Jr.had multiple productive plays in the 40-play, extended period – running for a long gain off tackle early, catching a quick pass later and finishing the first-team's participation in the period with a short touchdown run.
- Cornerback Jarrian Jones intercepted a pass from Lawrence that went off wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. hands on a crossing route in the middle of the field.
INJURY WATCH
- Cornerback Tyson Campbell missed practice Monday, with Coen saying he is day-to-day,
- Right tackle Anton Harrison missed practice with what Coen called "an excused personal absence."
- Remaining out of practice:
- Rookie linebacker Jalen McLeod (lower body)
- Reserve offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen (shoulder)
- Rookie safety Caleb Ransaw (lower body)
- Cornerback Montaric Brown (lower leg)
- Defensive tackle Arik Armstead (back)
- Second-year defensive tackle Maason Smith remains on the physically unable to perform list to start camp, with his injury undisclosed.
